Well, it's a house on a hill (ish) in the Lake District. It's in a beautiful part of the world and offers some lovely views. If you are a real Beatrix Potter fan then this is probably worth a visit for you but book an early slot, get there as it opens and march up to the house first otherwise it's going to be too busy to really see anything.

The car park is about 2 minutes walk down the road. Make sure you pre-book otherwise they won't let you in. You then need to go to the ticket hut in the car park area even if you have a ticket to collect a token (they don't tell you this so we'd walked up to the house and had to walk back down), the token seems to serve no function, you just give it to the person at the house when you enter. Token in hand you can then enter Hill Top. Whether you want it or not you get a little welcome talk by the volunteer at the entrance (and if you do manage to get past her she will track you down and make you come back to the entrance so she can give her speech).

The house itself if full of things that did actually belong to Beatrix Potter - although not necessarily things that were in the house when she lived there. It was nice to wander through and see some of the physical space that is described in some of her stories. However, it very quickly gets too busy to actually be able to linger and look at items. We spent maybe 10-15 minutes in the house. The garden is lovely and we spent a bit of time in the kitchen garden and then bought a coffee and sat by one of the fruit trees.

We are National Trust Members so it didn't costs us anything to visit but I think otherwise it would be 16 pounds per adult for something that will maybe take 45 minutes tops even if you spend more time in the house than we did. So if Beatrix Potter really is your thing, then go and enjoy. Otherwise there are plenty of nice and cheaper coffee spots around the Lake District

Stunning gardens and surrounding area, great parking, but be warned you do have a bit up an uphill walk to get to just the bottom entrance of the cottage and then further uphill again to get to actual cottage & gardens themselves. However once you get there it’s definitely worth it, the gardens are stunning and beautiful to walk around, the guides at the house are very knowledgeable and friendly, the house itself is beautiful with lots of original Beatrix Potter’s possessions, loads of information and little books giving you clues about each room. Lovely gift shop too, but a bit expensive however you can’t help but buy things! Dog friendly too in all the grounds but not the house itself. We had a lovely family day out and it’s definitely well worth a visit.

We are National Trust members and were staying in the area, so decided to visit Hilltop. Whilst I was familiar with Beatrix Potter's books, both from my own childhood and from reading them to our own children, my other half was not and I also have to admit that I could not really be called a big 'fan'.

That said, the National Trust website does point out that space is limited within the house - there are two rooms available to view downstairs and four upstairs; and that it is important to pre-book tickets, as entry is managed to avoid things feeling cramped.

You park about 150-200 yards away from the house, at the bottom of the village, and walk up the road to the house, approaching it along a pretty path. A volunteer, all of whom are lovely by the way and really well informed, will give you a brief explanation about what you can expect to find inside and simple rules, and then you are left to enter on a 'self-guided' tour.

There is a notice explaining that the rooms are kept in low light in order to preserve the items within. Photograpy is allowed, but no flash, and rooms do feel quite dark. A guidance as to, say, walking around the room in a clockwise direction for example, would have eased the flow.

I enjoyed the gardens more than the house (and I am categorically NOT a gardener) but it was lovely to see the vegetable patch where Beatrix Potter might have got her inspiration for Peter Rabbit helping himself to the cabbages and falling foul of Mr McGregor.

I think if you have children who are Beatrix Potter fans, you might struggle to engage them with what is on offer, other than giving in to buying them something from the shop at the bottom of the garden, which has lots of Peter Rabbit and friends gifts and souvenirs.

I'm sounding negative, whilst trying to be fair - a fine balance. If you read the information on the National Trust website before visiting, you will get a good idea of what to expect. If you are a big follower of Beatrix Potter, then I am sure you will gain lots of information and a real sense of how she lived but you may also feel a little flat about it, such as I did.

As members, entrance came within our membership; had we paid to enter I think we might have felt that it was rather costly.

It was a wonderful experience to see Hill Top house, where Beatrix Potter wrote so many of her stories. I especially love how the museum had copies of her books laid out in locations throughout the house so that we could see how strong of an influence the location had on her stories and drawings. I loved seeing her antiques, collections, and to learn more about her. It was so easy to see her being able to create those stories while living in this environment.

Hill Top has been on our wish list for a long time and it did not disappoint.
We parked easily in the reception area car park (there is an overflow nearby) and the check in was efficient. I think you would be ill advised not to have made a booking for your visit via the excellent website.
All the staff were friendly and enthusiastic.
The house and grounds easily lived up to our expectations.
There are toilets and a snack bar in the grounds and the usual very good National Trust shop.

It was interesting but not great for children (not a criticism more observation). However it is about £16 to get in if not NT member which I think is a lot for what it is.

It was a very interesting place telling the history of Beatrix Potter and how she wrote her stories. It has a nice garden restored to how it was during Beatrix potters time.

We went in October so crowds were not a problem. Its a small space—limited parking, small house (she never lived here!) and small garden—but all well maintained and pure charm. If you appreciate Beatrix Potter, its a must. I did not feel rushed to look into each room.

If you dont love BP, its cute but isnt a must see. We prepaid for parking and got there early AM to be there just before opening. PS You park in one spot and then walk to the house a brief distance away.

Disappointed. Wouldn't let us in didn't know we had to book in advance. This was at 3.15pm with spaces in the car park. Frustrating. We are National Trust members.
