Regn med å bruke rundt 1 time her.

The house feels as if Wordsworth might walk through the door at any point. The gardens were especially lovely with all the daffodils in flower. There are toileting facilities and there is a tea room on site.

We were really impressed with the amount of authentic memorabilia, the information from the poets own hand. Also the notes of his sister Dorothy which inspired plenty of William's work. The house was spacious and light, and in every nook and cranny more information to add to the experience. We used public transport from Keswick to get there, and there was a good footpath above Rydal to walk back to Grasmere.

We walked here from Ambleside, it was sunny so it was pleasant.
We were early, but the lovely tea room manager was happy to let us get a cuppa & a slice of their delicious Cumbrian tea bread whilst we sat outside. It was so quiet & peaceful.
We paid £5 each to go around Gardens, no house as we had dog with us, and it was well worth it.
The daffodils were in full bloom, it was sunny and the views of Grasmere were lovely.
Seldom have I spent a better £5.
Go first thing & fortify with tea bread, before wandering around enjoying the beautiful space.

Fabulous! Both the house and gardens were delightful. The staff were really friendly as was the owner or joint owner - one of the Wordsworth family. I just hope I didn't insult her in any way before I knew she was one of the family. I visited on Thursday 7th March and was so fortunate with the weather and there being so few visitors as they had just opened and it being early in the season. I could feel the sunlight and the tranquility. I hope to go back.

Bit of a mixed bag this one.

We arrived at the tea house and paid the lovely lady £20 for two of us. The website had mentioned a tour guide but there was no mention of this anywhere at the venue. There were a gaggle of ladies dressed in period clothing (I presume guides?) sat in the corner of the tea house but they seemed to be engaged in admin work on laptops and didn't acknowledge us at all, so we decided to self navigate through the house. The house was interesting from a historical perspective and the fact that Wordsworth's direct descendants still live in the house brings history to life and creates a link with the past. There wasn't really that much to see in all honesty and we managed to do the entire house in 10 minutes. I do feel that a guide to explain everything and relate stories would have improved the experience significantly. One of the best parts was the appearance of the family cat, a friendly ginger Tom sunning himself on a table in the living room knocking exhibits onto the floor as he caught some rays.

The gardens were idyllic with outstanding views of the fells and history dating back to the 9th century. A particular favourite was being able to sit in Dora Wordsworth's summer house. The collection of exotic plants - skunk cabbage, bamboo were a great reminder of the Victorian period and the past empire. The gardens, in my own opinion, were the more worthwhile part of the visit.

In summary:
House - 5/10
Gardens - 9/10
Cat - 10/10

Recommended as a hidden gem, this was the family home of Wordsworth and contains a selection of the family’s prized possessions and portraits. The small gardens are lovely with many hidden areas to explore. There are terraces, rock pools, a greenhouse and an ancient mound. I had read that there are lovely views of Rydal lake and the fells however the large trees mostly obscured the view when we visited.

We spent around half an hour exploring the grounds and then another half hour looking around the house. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the house, as usually I get bored quite quickly. I was amazed at the fantastic poem written in 2023 by a student, which deservedly won an award.

We had read that there is a waterfall a short walk away, along the coffin route, which we intended to walk to see. However the carparking seemed to be quite strict, as there are very limited places in the very small carpark, and was signposted as only for those visiting house and gardens, so we didn't dare to venture any further, as unsure how far away the waterfall actually is?

There are toilets, a tea room and free carparking, although the carpark is very very small and lots of people were parking on the road as you drive up the hill towards the entrance. Expect to spend around 1 hour here. Open Sunday to Thursday, from 10.30am to 4pm. Tickets to House & Gardens are £9.50 each or Gardens alone are £5, when buying on the door. We were able to use our 2-4-1 Gardening World voucher too, so a bargain but still great value we think at £9.50 each.

Thank you for a lovely report. We're very pleased you enjoyed your visit. The children's poetry competition is something we started a dozen years ago and it's become a really important feature for Cumbrian schoolchildren. We always display the winning poem for a year.

This is one of the best visits I have done. It is very intimate - the house is still in the ownership of the Wordsworth family and contains all sorts of paintings, ornaments, books that have been handed down within the family and by friends of the family. It is very informative with descriptions of many of the exhibits.

I thoroughly recommend it to all. It is totally ‘unregimented’ and unlike other museums/houses.

The gardens too are stunning and well maintained.

A five star visit - indeed the carrot cake from the lovely café was just like mother used to make it..!

We are a little puzzled by this. The online price according to our website is £10 per person. We will look into this and get back to you.

This was a visit of two halves. While the house and gardens were really lovely, well presented and interesting, our visit was rather strange.

We booked online for the earliest slot of 11am on Sunday 23/7, to be met by one member of staff in the café/giftshop who didn't really seem to know anything about the venue. We were told to just wait outside the house for our guide.

By 11.05 we were a group of about 10 visitors. As per the email I'd received, we rang the doorbell. No guide arrived.

We pushed the door open and spent an hour exploring the house. This was great, but we were completely alone. No guide or staff at all! We could have gone, having not booked, or paid, and taken all the furniture when we left!
