The 12th of April saw tentative steps back to normality for the hospitality sector with pubs being allowed to reopen with outside service only, Liverpool since the 30th of December has saw all pubs, bars and restaurants closed so it was so good wandering around town and having a refreshing brew sat outside a pub .
Hard Times & Misery is now called The Coach House by The Angus and run by the same team who own The Angus Tap & Grind on Dale Street, its a wonderful little bar set over two floors, nice decor and furnishings including a cute looking serving bar and outside seating which was essential for the reopening of pubs on the 12th of April.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Monday afternoon, we gave details of name and phone number to assist with the governments track and trace system and we were allocated a space on one of the bench tables, after a quick study of their real ale's we both opted to have Neptune Brewery " mosaic pale ale " , these were served in excellent condition, we just kicked back and soaked up the great vibe in this busy bar .
My pale ale was so good,a rich, full bodied pale with a big hit of hops, very easy to drink, a real ale style my twin brother Stephen and I are particularly keen on.
It was great being out and socialising again ,as an added bonus the weather was superb, chilly but bright sunshine 🌞.
We really enjoyed our pale ale's in here and the great atmosphere so much so that we ended up staying for another couple of pale ale's before we moved on.
Hard Times & Misery ( The Coach House by The Angus ) is easy to locate along Maryland Street.
Most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Liverpool is justifiably famous for its amazing real ale pubs and Hard Times & Misery which is now called Dickens & King is a particular favourite of mine.
It's only a tiny pub,set over two floors, a rustic looking interior, great decor and furnishings including a cool looking serving bar ,its a great pub to unwind in.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Saturday evening, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff, after a quick study of their beers my brother went for a pale ale while I opted to have an Imperial stout, both these brews were served in excellent condition, we took our beers upstairs were we just chilled out.
My Imperial stout was absolutely delicious, a strong, dark and malty brew with hints of caramel, certainly not a brew to rush but being in such a wonderful pub enjoying such a quality brew why would you want to rush anything, my twin brother Stephen also gave me a thumbs up to his pale ale.
We both really enjoyed our beers in here and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to here we had a great time.

Range of craft beer which pleased. No cider today but sometimes has it. Very warm welcome and worth a visit especially if you like your real ale

They have changed the bar around to try to make more room. But don't worry the beers have been unaffected. We had high quality real ale, served quickly, properly, pleasantly. This place is still a little gem. Please go!!

Had not heard of Hard Times and Misery until yesterday. Mr E rang to say they (him and friends from work were going there) and they had gin, so it was a no brainer!

Eventually found it, no thanks to Google Maps which sent me the long way round. Basically, walk up Bold Street, cross over by St Luke's (aka the bombed out church) and up Hardman Street. Turn left at MacKenzie's whisky bar and first right. I only found it as Mr E and friends were all standing outside - it wasn't big enough to fit them all in!

Young woman at the bar was lovely, we had a chat about gin and I settled on Mermaid. Quirky little place but worth a visit. Not sure why there's a complaint about paying £3.60 for a pint when most of their beers are from small breweries and small batches. Certainly as where I live a local restaurant tried to charge me £3.45 for a glass of soda water but that's another story!

If you like odd little places Hard Times and Misery is well worth a visit. Even just to say the name!

This place has been going for a couple of years and has recently had a refurb. The small bar downstairs is now more roomy, and the beer quality has improved as the real ale is now on hand pull cask instead of on gravity. Great local beers on offer from Melwood and Gibberish.

The owners Greig and Jen make you feel very welcome in this tiny bar hidden away off Rodney Street.

You pop in for a quick drink, but stay for more because it's so friendly.

Well worth a visit if you are in the Hardman Street and Hope Street area of Liverpool city centre, and it's only a short walk from Bold Street and Seel Street area.

Hard Times And Misery is a small beer bar located in the back streets of Liverpool that once you've visited you will inadvertably return to time and time again as the welcome is so warm and the drinks menu is so good.
It's only small, set over two floors, the main serving area holds about a dozen people ,it's got eclectic decor and furnishings including a cool looking serving bar, the upstairs is only slightly larger but it's also cool.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Saturday night, bar was unsurprisingly full ,we got a pale ale each which was served in excellent condition, we took are drinks upstairs were we very luckily managed to get a table were we just chilled out and took in the great bar we were in.
My pale ale was exceptional, hoppy, well balanced and bursting with taste and very easy to drink indeed, it's a beer style I really enjoyed, my twin brother also gave the thumbs up to his beer.
These are my type of bars, hidden gems which attract a clientele who appreciate a good beer.
We really enjoyed our pale ales in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time.
Hard Times And Misery is easy to locate on Maryland Street.

Love this place! Small and hidden away, but great music, gin and beer! Reasonably priced too. We arrived early afternoon and it was empty, but by the time we left, it was pretty full. Great atmosphere

Having been here a couple of times before, I feel that each time is not as good as the last. Previously, I have felt welcomed and really enjoyed perusing the gin menu but this time was rather chaotic. I understand that there was an issue with the beer but this was prioritised over serving customers. No gin menu was available and very few to choose from. No explanation of what type of gin each of them was. The concept of this place is fabulous and if they could return the place to the high quality of drinks and service they have had before, then it would be wonderful. Alas, I certainly won’t be in a rush to return with friends.
