15th of April 1989 should have been a fun day out for the football fans of Liverpool F.C and Nottingham Forest ,meeting in the semi final of the F.A Cup ,but fun turned to tragedy ,the events that unfolded left 97 Liverpool fans dead ,this memorial is amazing and very powerful ,a seven foot tall memorial with the simple words " Hillsborough Disaster,we will always remember them" there's also a very touching poem from journalist David Charters .
The memorial stands in remembrance of those that never returned home and is most definitely well worth seeking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along William Brown Street.

We particularly wanted to see this tribute to the horrific tragedy of 1989.

Created by Tom Murphy it is a moving tribute. Birds soar throughout the circular monument and symbolise the many lost.

One relief shows a young woman with a inscribed sash across her shoulders and she holds an open book. Brings to mind what might have been for the lives if the disaster hadn’t happened.

Un momento di riflessione e un pensiero per le 89 vittime, esattamente a 34 anni dalla strage di Hillsborough.

What should have been a been a showcase F.A Cup semi final between Liverpool v Nottingham Forest on the 15th of April 1989 turned into tragedy of epic proportions and left as it's aftermath 97 Liverpool fans dead ,the last victim dying in 2021 and many injured in what is England's deadliest sporting events .
The memorial stands 7 feet high ,the words " Hillsborough Disaster ,we will always remember them " also on the memorial is a poem by local journalist David Charters which is so moving .
This memorial is in honour of the fans that never came home from the match but also for all football fans ,it's easy to locate along William Brown Street/ Old Haymarket and is well worth checking out if you're in the area .

Located just outside St John's Gardens behind St George's Hall is a memorial to arguably one of the most poignant football memorials namely The Hillsborough Monument Memorial.
Sculpured by the renowned and prolific Tom Murphy the memorial is dedicated to the 96 Liverpool F C fans who lost their lives in The Leppings Lane Terrace of the Hillsborough Stadium, home to Sheffield Wednesday in the F A Cup semi final match between Liverpool v Nottingham Forest.
This poignant memorial was unveiled on the eve of the 24th anniversary of the disaster in April 2013.
The memorial stands 7 feet tall ,the words " Hillsborough Disaster, we will always remember them " and the names of the 96 poor souls who perished that fateful day .
Also on the memorial is a poem by local journalist David Charters which is extremely moving .
I really believe this is a very important memorial not just to Liverpool .F.C fans but to all football fans.
The Hillsborough Monument Memorial is easy to locate along William Brown Street/ Old Haymarket in front of St John's Gardens and is most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

15th April 1989 marked the darkest day in the history of Liverpool Football Club when through lack of police control 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives in the Hillsborough Football Stadium at the start of the semi final of the F.A Cup match between Liverpool F.C v Nottingham Forest and this very touching and poignant memorial was unveiled on the eve of the 24th anniversary of the disaster in April 2013.
The memorial is dedicated to the 96 football fans who lost their lives in the Leppings Lane terrace in the Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield Wednesday's football ground ,this monument is over 7 foot tall and has the words " Hillsborough Disaster ,we will remember them " with the names of the 96 fans who died that fateful day ,reading the names on the monument and it strikes you how young most of the victims were ,lives cut short, families devasted.
Sculpured by renowned sculptor Tom Murphy, the designs on the memorial are really good ,he actually described the people represented on the memorial as " people like us " ,also on the memorial is a poem dedicated from local journalist David Charters which is so moving .
I vividly remember that day ,watching the horrific scenes unfold before the nations eye's was a memory I will never forget,my brother and some friends attended that match ,and nor should I ,we should all remember that day and the subsequent cover up attempted .
The monument is very easy to locate on the corner of William Brown Street/ Old Haymarket in front of St John's Gardens behind St George's Hall and is most definitely well worth a visit.
