What is the Walker Art Gallery?

The Walker Art Gallery is an Art Gallery that is located in the heart of Liverpool. It is set in a beautiful historical building that holds numerous Exhibitions and displays that take place throughout the year.

Exhibitions

Photie Man: 50 Years of Tom Wood

Who is Tom Wood?

Tom Wood born in 1951 is a celebrated artist who has redefined the way that we think about photography in Britain.

This Exhibition showcases work from his archive from the 1970s to the present day. There is a great variety of photographs on display from portraits to beautiful landscapes. Most of his work was made in Liverpool and Merseyside. He lived there from 1978 to 2003.

The Exhibition

This Exhibition was well presented in that each room within the Gallery represented a different decade of his work. You witnessed how he would take black and white photographs to which this then developed over time by using different cameras with colour.

His photographs are spectacular in the level of detail. In addition, Tom created unique relationships with the people that he took photos with.

It was also brilliantly executed with a range of issues that was exquisitely shown through his work. His work dealt with multiple issues from relationships, families, the night life, New Brighton, the markets, the ship-yard, football and more.

Over more the Exhibition was not just simply masses of photographs but it was also interesting and engaging with written information and video footage of his work. It truly brought his photography to life in awe-inspiring ways.

Highlights

The main highlights from the exhibition were as follows:

Tom Wood’s Looking for Love series where he took intimate photos from the Chelsea Reach Nightclub in New Brighton. Through these photos you gained an insight of relationships between people that would meet at that nightclub.

Another highlight was when he would take photos of people on bus journeys. This was done through his Bus Series ‘Zones All Of Peak’.

In addition he conveyed the atmosphere of fans at football stadiums both at Goodison and Anfield grounds via his photos whilst attending matches.

The Walker Art Gallery is a fine art museum in Liverpool, England. It is one of the largest museums in the city, and it houses a collection of over 40,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and decorative arts.

The gallery was founded in 1877, and it has been expanded several times since then. The current building was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse, and it was opened in 1926.

The Walker Art Gallery has a wide-ranging collection of art, including works by British artists such as William Turner, John Constable, and L.S. Lowry. It also has a significant collection of European art, including works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Picasso.

I visited the Walker Art Gallery recently, and I was overall impressed with the collection. However, I felt that the museum could be improved in a few ways.

Not impressed . Sorry. You are welcome with a BLM poster. Many Victorian or Georgian paintings will be tarnished on slavery. Disclaimer about what is painted was not the reality at Victorian time ie that poverty is not represented. Then anything about feminism activism and LGBT will be glorified. Finally some nice piece of China tarnished by disclaimer stating that children were working in factories to make them. I did not come to this museum to be lectured on all this. The rest of the collection is fine. But overall the whole museum needs a revamp and less wokery. Disappointing.

It is an impressive building and the sculpture gallery is great. There are, of course, lots of paintings by various artists as well as in different styles, so you would be sure to find at least one of the galleries you found interesting! There are also exhibitions to have a look round. You can visit the Museum at no charge from 10 am to 5 pm each day apart from Mondays but it opens on Bank Holidays and during school holidays in Liverpool. There is a cafe and shop which we didn't take advantage of.

Great gallery. Had some famous arts on display, Gainsborough and Rossetti among them. The statue court was wonderful. I would allow a good 2 hours to browse amongst some great art.

We had a lovely time at the museum. There is mostly medieval, renaissance and baroque style paintings with some impressionist art also.
We also got talking to Arthur who works here and was very lovely, he spoke to us about some of the paintings and recommended some pieces to look at.

An amazing building in itself, but the exhibits inside are truly amazing.
We limited ourselves to the medieval paintings gallery and the sculpture gallery. Both fabulous. When we have more time, we will revisit.

Kunstmuseum waar alle schilderijen op chronologische volgorde per zaal zijn opgehangen.
Veel middeleeuwse kunst en Britse schilders van de pre raphaelites.
Voor de speciale tentoonstellingen zijn kaartjes vereist.
