By its nature it could be anywhere in the world. But 25 countries agreed in 1884 that it should be here.

It was fun standing with one half in the east and the other in the west.

One of the things that Greenwich is known for is the establishment of standards for time around the world. So to see the marking on the ground for the standard beginning is interesting. A quick visit.

Obviously it’s only some lucky ones who reach the place. You get mesmirised reaching the place where compass is zero. Must take your kids along

The Prime Meridian Line is the method we use to measure time around the world so it is quite a significant line.

At the Royal Observatory in Greenwich there is a line on the ground and this is also marked on the path below which you can visit even if the observatory is closed to get those great photo opportunities.

In addition within Greenwich itself there is a marker to signify the mean line. This could be useful to visit for those people who are not so energetic and cannot climb the hill to the observatory.

If you want to go even further afield on the outskirts of the town of Royston in Hertfordshire there is a sign signifying the meridian line. There is also a school close by called Meridian school which sits on the meridian line.

Family members all enjoyed the walk up and back to the Meridian line … quite steep in places but ok. Beautiful gardens and a magnificent view from the top. Of course we all stood on the line. ( down a tiny path outside the wall and pay for view area ). All good

You don't have to pay to enter the Royal Observatory to see the Prime Meridian line. When you are looking at the Observatory (from outside the fence), look to the right and you will see a tall, black iron gate. Right beside the fence/gate is a sign that says "Continue your Greenwich adventure". Go inside the fence/gate (it's perfectly fine, it's not locked and you can enter). Once inside, you will see the Prime Meridian line. It may not be as fancy as the one you can see inside the Observatory (actually, I have no idea, I didn't go inside), but it's awesome nonetheless. And be sure to look to your right, as there is an amazing view of London.

As far as we could tell, you needed to buy a ticket to the observatory to see a line on the ground.

The observatory has more time-based exhibits, but if your primary focus is the meridian line then you will see a line on the ground.

Our kids were not particularly interested (but perhaps we didn't explain it well enough).

You get a good view from up here (more specifically from the top of the hill outside the entrance to the observatory).

New experience. Great knowledge. Good to visit during warm weather. Many souvenirs to select from the gift shop. Expect to climb the hill to reach it.

Lots of folks, including myself, have a curious interest in the science, history, time, distance, astronomy, location and technology aspects of the Prime Meridian - that imaginary line which traverses our planet north-south at Longitude 0°. Every place on earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from this line. The line divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the earth, just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres. The Prime Meridian also serves as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and thus is the reference point for world time.

So, if you stand with one foot on one side of the Prime Meridian line and the other foot on the other side of the line, you are standing in both the eastern and western hemispheres at the same time.

In the age of the selfie it’s a very desirable one. Visitors to London who have this aim in mind usually head up to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich... only to find it’s been closed because of COVID, or put off by the £16.00 entrance fee to access the Prime Meridian (it's a part of a visit to the Royal Observatory and Museum there). However you don’t have to go into the Royal Observatory to stand on the Prime Meridian, and there are many places where you can do it for free. For a start, if you turn right down the path just by the wall clock at the end of the path up to the Royal Observatory, you’ll see the line on the wall and the footpath. You’ll find the line marked in many spots throughout London, and in fact it’s marked in many spots throughout England, including down the south near Peacehaven, and right up north near Cleethorpes.

My favourite spot for a selfie on the Prime Meridian is just across the Thames in East India Docks. There’s a long pathway called Prime Meridian Walk, with the line clearly marked along the walk. As the line reaches the river there’s a huge compass marked on the pathway. There’s lots of room on the line for fun, and for more creative pictures. I was the only one there when I visited. And it’s free. It’s a few minutes’ walk from East India station on the Docklands Light Rail network. Cross Blackwell Road after you exit East India station, walk left past the ‘Subway ‘ food outlet, and you’ll see an alleyway on your right. Walk down the alleyway and the line of the Prime Meridian will appear on the footpath. Follow it all the way to the river.

It’s actually the best of all the spots I’ve been to, where the Prime Meridian Line is marked. I’ve been to the markings on Lee High Road in South London, and in the foot tunnel at Hither Green rail station - not great for selfies by any means! This spot in East India Docks certainly allows a good selfie.
