Overgrown and run down
okt. 2019 • Alene
Boundary Gardens stand at the centre of Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, a sort of larger mainly residential version of Seven Dials. It could be so much better. It’s a grand space with a Victorian bandstand at its top with a walkway all around the perimeter. But it’s all rather run down and overgrown, indeed a rather miserable and depressing site on a grey rainy day like this Sunday afternoon. Some of the buildings around the perimeter are solid Victorian blocks but nothing special. There is clearly some French connection as some of the radiating streets have names such as Navarre and Rochelle. The latter is also the name of the former La Rochelle school whose canteen has been brought back to life as an acclaimed restaurant run by the female duo of Arnold and Henderson the latter bring the wife of Fergus of nose to tail eating fame as one of the creators of St. John. Another interesting building in the vicinity is Haggerston school designed by Erno Goldfinger.

Boundary Circle Gardens
okt. 2018 • Alene
The Boundary Gardens, or Boundary Estate Gardens is a circular set of gardens with a bandstand at the centre. Surrounding the Boundary Gardens is the Boundary estate, which was constructed in 1890s and one of the earliest social housing schemes built in London.

The garden is well maintained and the the bandstand makes for a nice picture.

Nice raised garden with Victorian bandstand
aug. 2018 • Alene
These gardens were created in 1900 as a focal point in the London County Council's development of the Boundary Estate in Shoreditch as part of the slum clearance programme in the East End. They were opened by the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII. They're located at the centre of Arnold Circus, from which all the streets of the estate radiate. The main feature is the late Victorian bandstand in the paved upper level, but there is a lower level with a path running round the circumference of the gardens between nicely planted flower beds. They are now maintained by the Friends of Arnold Circus, a local action group set up in 2004, in partnership with Tower Hamlets council following extensive renovation work in 2009/10. These are a lovely place to relax and spend a little time.
