I've heard of Petticoat Lane Market as it was quite a famous place many years ago! I visited for the first time with a friend and I was disappointed to be honest! The area is very run down and dirty. There was just rails and tables of massive piles of shoes, clothes and bags, there wasn't much that was of good quality, a lot of the clothing I looked was stained, grubby or faded. My friend (who has been to this market many times before) told me to watch my handbag as the area was very busy. I wouldn't rush back.

Very disappointing. Just lots of poor quality clothing, dubious “designer” stuff and cheap bling, with one or two old-time stalls to make the visit worthwhile.

While a flea market type activity today the place has historical significance.

Only market allowed open on Sunday as all shop owners were originally Jewish.

As such, they were allowed to to open on Sunday as their Sabbath ws Friday PM and Saturday AM.

I worked in London thirty years ago and we used to go in our lunch times and then back up sometimes on a Sunday and it was an amazing market! I guess, as with a lot of markets, the economy has hit them and the stalls have reduced drastically. However I can’t tell you how disappointing this was. It was like a walkthrough a jumble sale with people rifling through the stalls. Gone are all the decent stalls. I would not recommend it being worth going to. Spitalfields is excellent and would go there again any time but Petticoat Lane it’s bye bye. The only redeemer in all of it was we ended up right outside of Eataly and just had to go in for a coffee lol. Amazing place!

Never been before so nothing to compare to. It’s a busy clothing market with a variety of very reasonably priced items. Seems there is a lot of M and S and George stuff. Bartering seems to be ok on the household item stalls. M and S shirts for a fiver! One stall had three shirts for£12! There is a lot of other stuff which maybe more for a discerning audience but the atmosphere is fascinating. It’s a market in London in an iconic location. There is a bargain waiting for anyone worth giving it a look. Really worth a visit just for the experience.

It has been operating since 1608. It operates in the area every day, with Sunday being the largest day – with over 1000 stalls. Most stalls negotiate the price, but they are very experienced. It is very crowded, so be careful of pickpockets. According to legend, it name comes from "they would steal your petticoat at one end of the market and sell it back to you at the other."

Well i used to go many times many years ago and the crowds! It was a big part of Jewish East London. Then…Amazing top class shops and stalls, it was all a street theatre from start to finish.
Now all gone replaced by 4th world tat. One plus “NO CROWDS”!
At least these amazing old days, are on film on YouTube!

Lots of very cheap clothing, hard to figure out your size because no place to try on. The same market is on Roman road and other areas of London on different days. It is an interesting cultural experience.

There was a time when people would set out blankets and sell their own things, like a huge garage sale, but those days are gone. Miss them.

This lane lies in the East End near the Liverpool Street Station. It is thronged with pub goers and students as there are various university student residences around it. The lane has an interesting history. A market existed here since the Tudor times. It was called Hog’s Lane, as the bakers were allowed to keep pigs outside their shops. By 1608 it became a clothes and fabric market. This area was severely affected by the 1665 plague. The rich shoppers either died or moved out. After that it saw mass inwards migration. First Spanish, then Huguenot, then Jews and lastly the Bangladeshi’s and East Asian settled here. It is also called the Banglatown now. The market got formal charter in 1930. It was severely bombed during the World Wars. It was officially renamed as Middlesex Street because the Victorian ladies were too embarrassed to shop in market named after undergarments. Now you can find vintage clothing and designer ripoff’s stalls here. There are some budget food stalls here too.
