Walking through the market I was agog at the quantity of fresh fish, and decided to take one home with me. Having chosen a red snapper off the display it was cleaned for me, handed to me in a bag and I was then told it was £12. When I suggested that that was a lot I was let off the £2. Last time I ever do that: how on earth do they sell all that fish if that's how much it costs!? It's back to Tesco's seabass in a bag I'm afraid.

What was once a neighborhood with a very bad reputation is today one of the most attractive, lively and colorful neighborhoods in London. It is very easy to access since the Victoria metro line has a stop in the heart of the neighborhood. The most interesting thing are the markets, both open-air and covered. You can enjoy Brixton Market from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., although Wednesday usually ends at 3:00 p.m. The businesses in the shopping arcades usually open at 10 in the morning and close at dusk. Along Brixton Road there are stalls selling second-hand clothes, trinkets, music, fruit and vegetables, while on Electric Avenue we can find Caribbean fish, specialized food or meat. The craft area is located in the market on the other side of the metro station. If you have time, you have to visit it.

The area feels really run down. Most of the market stalls are selling fruit/vegetables, which might be great if you live locally but not overly helpful for the tourist crowd. Watched one of the butchers walking a shopping trolley full of beef legs, entirely uncovered through the market so would have concern around freshness and hygiene of the meet and fish.
Much preferred portobello road market.

Electric Avenue is the main outdoor component of a more extensive Brixton Market complex. The now pedestrianised street is widely recognised as the first street in the UK to get public electric lighting. It’s lined with independent shops selling household goods, hair and beauty products and services, the odd betting shop or ten, cheap clothing, wigs, fishmongers, butchers, bakers (but no candlestick makers). In the street itself are stalls selling flowers, and a myriad of fresh fruit and vegetables. It reflects cultural diversity, though there is a notable African and Caribbean focus due to a local community that has grown from the first influx from the West Indies in the late 1940s.
You can’t help but notice the large art deco lettering on the top of the building at the entrance to Electric Avenue at Brixton Road, and the curious Foxes and Cherries sculpture on the rooftop at the corner of Electric Avenue and Electric Lane. It was unveiled in 2010 and created by artist Lucy Casson. It’s a playful interpretation of the scavenging foxes which live amongst us in London, feasting on cherries from the market. And you may even end singing a few lines from Eddy Grant’s 1982 tune ‘Electric Avenue’ which was written and recorded not long after the Brixton riots in 1981.
It’s pleasant, and safe, for a browse, though at the time of my visit, social distancing and mask wearing seems to have gone by the board. The emphasis is on cheap and cheerful. It’s colourful, lively, and a bit of a sensory fiesta with the smells and sounds of chicken jerk sizzling and tinny reggae playing in the background. It's not my favourite street market in London by any means, and the surrounds can look a bit shabby and grimy at times, but its worth a visit if you are in Brixton. It operates daily, into the evening.
Electric Avenue is just one component of the Brixton Market. Cross Atlantic Road and as you enter Pope’s Lane under the railway, you’ll see a striking mural on your right, and an entrance to the Brixton Village, the covered arcaded area of the market. It also brims with quirky shops, fruit and vegetable stands, and a myriad of cafes and restaurants. There’s also Market Row off Electric Lane.
But don’t limit your visit to the Brixton Market complexes. There’s some great street art in the neighbourhood, the Black Cultural Archives on Windrush Square, and just a bit further afield, the curious Brixton Windmill and the lovely expanse of Brockwell Park (reviewed separately).
Brixton is easily reached by the Underground from Central London; it’s the last stop on the southbound Victoria Line. Electric Avenue is a few minute’s walk to the left as you exit the station.

Brixton Market occupies Electric Avenue. It has a real buzz and vibe that is worth visiting. Local foods and traders selling their goods. It is perfectly safe and an interesting place to visit. Well worth going.
