If you’ve been to London before and are looking for something to do beyond the major sights, this small but fascinating museum fits the bill! Learn how medicine was practised from the 1200s through the 1800s - it’s super interesting to see how far we’ve come.

Very qwerky little museum lots of information and things to look at and read. Really enjoyed this museum was cheap (£20 for family ticket) and well worth the money. Enjoyed seeing the operating theatre

We went here on a recommendation. It's an amazing place and so full of history and lore. So many instruments on display. Stairs to the operating theatre are very steep but you only have to go up them once.

Great find.
Fab little place to learn about medical procedures from the 19th century, love the little spiral staircase / traffic light system.
I did enjoy it but it doesn't take very long to go round. Hadn't realised the shard was jut down the road too!
Worth a visit though if you are in the area (the museum).

There was so much to see lived the quizzes you could do and learn from in the exhibits. So much information to learn from. Absolutely great gem in the heart of London.

As a group from a U3A we had a smashing visit with an engaging talk covering the gory bits with a light humour and lots of interaction.
We were all fascinated by the history and enjoyed looking around the museum - the time simply flew by.
Several members are planning to go again and take family and friends.

Really enjoyed this little museum. It’s self guided so you have to want to read bits and take your time investigating. What made our trip was a lady apothecary assistant, dressed in period costume, who was amazing. She stayed in character and interacted with what you said to her in a very entertaining and educational way, to all age groups present. Very engaging and huge compliments! DD emjoyed the little scented bath sachet made for her “once a year bath” but I decided to forgo the suggestion of smothering myself in mercury even if it is the rage amongst the rich set of London. :-)
We actually went to this museum as DD is studying change in medicine for gcse 1850-1950 ish and we would have loved to have access to some of the talks posted on the website that are only open to school groups, as I think if the lady apothecary was anything to go by (whilst unfortunately this was outside the time period of study) it would have made the whole thing absolutely amazing.
As it is the museum isn’t expensive and if are fascinated my the history of medicine it’s well worth it. But perhaps not for the squeamish and it does rather make you think what we take for granted now.
I recommend.

An amazing hidden gem near Borough Market for anyone that is in the medical field. This adorable museum requires you to walk 54 steps up an old wooden spiral staircase with a rope for a handle. You can only go one way and must wait for a "clear sign" via a red X or a green arrow to be able to come or go from the museum. Once up the stairs the museum is small but worth the cost.

This small but excellent museum has you cringing at the brutal nature of surgery in the past. Lots of detailed cabinets of curiosity with labels that explain the use - history of various equipment & instruments.
As part of the larger history of London hospitals & theatres - this museum is great.
Highly recommend

I had so much fun here! My mum was a nurse for 35 years and I've spent much time studying anatomy and physiology, as well as pharmacology. This place was right up my alley (and literally up the alley from my hostel). The staff are very friendly and informative. A museum like this in the States would have been a ripoff and the gift shop would have been absurdly priced, but this museum was less than $10 USD and I left with A LOT of gifts to bring home with me. The space seems small but when you get inside it's pretty vast and they pack a lot in there without it being crowded. Note: the steps to get in and out are scary. An older woman was behind me with a cane and frankly I don't know how she got up and down them. I am a muscular 33 year old woman and they were rough for me. You'll see what I mean when you get there because you had better get there!

Yes!
I brought a huge camera and was in there for a long time (I didn1t use flash, so I don't know if they have a rule against that). The staff smiled at me :-)
The pictures were great and I am very happy I took them :-)

buen dia, puedo sacar la entrada al museo en el momento o debo comprarla antes por internet?
Skrevet 17. juli 2018
I would personally buy it earlier. We turned up one day and couldn't get in. Bought it on the internet the next day to be sure.

Are there any facilities to leave a small suitcase whilst we visit?
Skrevet 18. mars 2018
There should not be any problems leaving your suitcase. The guy at the ticket counter was very nice. When we went, the ticket counter was upstairs so you will have to carry the suitcase up the narrow stairs. So it will depend on the weight of the suitcase.

Going to London next week and I know it was closed for a while. Has the Old Operating Theatre re-opened?
Skrevet 24. juni 2017
Hi, I suggest you check their website. We went in December. Hope it's open for you. It is interesting and a pretty quick visit.
Skrevet 24. juni 2017
Apologies for the delay, but the answer is no. We are a small charity and the entrance fees allow us to keep the museum running. Please go to our website for more information.

hello,
How long shall I have to plan to visit this museum ?
Skrevet 12. desember 2015
Me gustaría ir, varias preguntas,
¿hay letreros en castellano o todo está en inglés?
¿Tiempo estimado de la visita?
¿Se forman muchas colas?
Gracias!
Skrevet 5. september 2015
The museum offers information sheets in Spanish, but all object signs are in English. The average visits lasts 30 minutes and the busiest day is Saturday.
Kind regards,
The Old Operating Theatre

How early can you enter to the dockyard, without going to the attractions ? I'm arriving at 7:00am on a Britanny ferries from Caen ,and I would like to just walk around before leaving for Salisbury . Thanks !
Skrevet 27. mai 2015
If you are leaving Caen at seven I cannot see you arriving in London before ten, the ferry takes one hour forty, perhaps and train to London will take an hour or maybe more by the time you have cleared customs and passport control, sorted out tickets etc,, it will be ten and everything will be open. One advantage you have is after 9.30 travel is cheaper, if you are coming back to London buy an Oyster card in the tube station, otherwise use contactless cards on the transport system.
