The deconsecrated church of St Mary-at-Lambeth is right next to the entrance to Lambeth Palace. Apparently, it would have been demolished if it had not been turned into something else. That would have been a shame! But how do you make a Garden Museum on a reasonably small plot of land between the Archbishop's Palace and a main road?
The team had some advantages and some brilliant ideas! The building has been wonderfully restored - the stained glass appears new (I could not find anything on the building restoration, so I may be wrong) and, due to the insertion of an upper floor, you can get much closer to it than in most churches. There are several historical wall memorials (e.g. Hon Herbert Lyttelton Pelham, killed in action in 1914; Frederick Cornwallis, Archbishop of Canterbury was buried here). There is the tomb of William Bligh, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame (though the inscription does not mention that event). Most spectacularly, there is the highly-decorated tomb of English naturalists and explorers John Tradescant the Elder (c. 1570s – 1638) and John Tradescant the Younger (1608–1662), who introduced many new plants to English gardens. Carl Linnaeus honoured them by naming the genus Tradescantia after them. Both these tombs are in the enclosed garden.
Two architectural features stand out:
1. The font, usually next to the front door, is replaced by a full immersion baptismal pool - semi-circular with steps on both ends (I have not seen such in an Anglican church previously).
2. The tower, ascended by 131 steps. You can enter the tower alone for a reduced fee, but the full ticket price for the museum covers it too. The views are brilliant and we had the advantage of a very clear day.
The whole idea of a Garden Museum is a huge challenge, especially in such a small site. The museum collection proper is upstairs (there is a lift). There are exhibits on famous gardeners, but obviously this is a microcosm of the world of gardening. The organisers have done a good job, though it inevitably falls short, despite their best efforts, covering such a huge topic. But they do have one exhibit which is amazing: Humphry Repton's Red Book for Sundridge Park (1793). It is bound in blue, rather than red, but I have never seen one on public display.
All in all, recommended, but manage your expectations! And the owners do have plans for further development.

I was expecting to learn about the history of plants being introduced to Britain from other countries but there was little of this. A lot of the labels were difficult to read in the low light. Disappointingly thin on contents and not worth the admission price.

A nice museum in a church with a lot about the history of gardening. It has always an art exhibition that changes from time to time. Do not expect a huge garden.

Very bad value for money 💸
Expensive tickets for visiting a small, boring, old school museum 😱 and an oppressive temporary exhibition "Frank Walter" 🙊🙈🙉
On Oct. 4th 2023 the tower was closed for maintenance, but you still had to pay the full entrance fee 🤪, after arguing!! with 2 different staff members, we were told that we could come "on another day" to visit the tower for free when showing our receipt ... ha ha, not very customer friendly, why didn't they offer a discount?!
The "video/movie" (1. floor didn't work, was also under repair!).
There is no garden/park to visit (just a kind of mini "jungle" close to the unattractive "café") , there are no plants/flowers to admire ... but a lot of "bric-à -brac" 😱
Don't recommend this "museum" and won't be back.
Skip this place because London has so much to offer that you shouldn't spoil your time/money at "Garden museum"!!
Better idea: visit the brilliant modern art museum close by for free! Newport Street Gallery !

Depending on your level of interest in the history of gardening ,ours is average interest, but did find some interesting facts to enlighten our visit. Not everyone's cup of tea but the building its-self is tastefully restored from Lambeth St Mary's church and alone is worth a visit. A trip up to the the top of the tower can be hard going but worth it to view London from a different angle. A nice restaurant with garden area also on the site, slightly expensive, but this is tourists London!

Good location, fabulous building. The Garden Museum recounts the history of formal gardening in the UK since the 16th century. There is also a small display of old gardening tools that look very much like modern ones. One or two interactive displays to help you understand the dangers and adventures of bringing exotic plants from Asia, South America or Africa. The building is a restores 18th century church, complete with stained-glass windows. A cafeteria and toilets are available, and there is a tube station, a five-minute walk away.

I had a great coffee and ginger oat cookie delicious and not expensive. The tower was stunning nice I had my breath back. I enjoyed the museum but I thought the gardens and galleries could be much bigger.

The Garden museum is disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend it, lovely building but not a lot there.
Overpriced cafe, tiny portion of Greek salad for £9 and bad service.

Whilst you can only admire the gardens and the building, the actual museum is one of London’s weaker efforts and is certainly overpriced. Can’t in any way recommend even for garden lovers.

Is there an admission fee?

There is an entry fee to the museum. It will be on their website. You can get a 50% reduction with an ArtPass. You can use the cafe/restaurant though without entering the museum and enjoy the new extension!
