We attended this venue to see “Why am I so single” , excellent show and cast, drinks a bit steep. Good view from the upper circle, pleasant staff too!

Came to see a performance, which we enjoyed. The theater seemed a bit run down and in need to TLC. From where I sat, it looked like some plywood had been put up on some of the wall partitions on the upper level. The seats were comfortable enough so it was adequate but certainly not impressive.

A very beautiful Theatre , with many well preserved architectural features , beautiful chandeliers and painted ceilings.
Helpful and friendly staff , plenty of toilets and places to get a drink.
The seats were very comfortable and we had a great view of the stage from the Stalls.
Highly recommended .

Treated my partner to the show For Black Boys who have considered... and it was fantastic. He'd never been to a theatre before so I was quite apprehensive of how he'd take the experience, he absolutely loved it. The show was perfect as were the Staff, most helpful and polite. Will definitely return again in future!

It’s a long time since I nodded off on a play but I am sorry to say I did!! Drab at best, miscast actors with wrong annoying accents, boring boring and boring. My wife was so disappointed as she loved the book and I go along as the plus one. The Garrick is not great either; tired and with the underground chugging underneath a real off putter. Oh well one to slag off and remember for posterity.

Hamnet has to be the poorest RSC performance I have ever seen. More like Emmerdale with with a bit of new age hokum. Utterly dreary.

Hamnet Play Review at The Garrick
Many years ago, as I was walking out of an Eddie Izzard show, I saw the Promoter at the bottom of the stairs scanning the faces of people as they left. I asked a mutual friend what he was doing and she said he was sensing the buzz, were people moved, were they happy (they were). Ever since, I’ve tried to do the same when walking out of a show and I did it when walking out of Hamnet. What I experienced was an audience unmoved, no emotion, just flat.
For a novel that carries such visceral emotion this adaptation was a huge disappointment. The power, the charisma, the other-worldliness of the Agnes Shakespeare character in the novel becomes diluted here to the point that it’s difficult to connect with her.
In some ways the other characters get in the way, Shakespeare himself gets too much attention. Whole sections of the play are given over to him rehearsing plays in what is, to anyone who has seen the TV series Upstart Crow, a rehash of the similar scenes in those shows, right down to the characterisation of the actors Burbage and Kempe. There was comic relief in these parts which no one was looking for and were unnecessary. If these sections were stripped out more room would have been left over for us to get to know Agnes.
The most disappointing aspect of the staging though was the complete lack of effort to portray Agnes as someone so at one with nature that, in the novel, it was hard to separate the human and her power as a woman from the natural environment in which she existed.
There were lots of clever aspects to the staging (maybe a little too clever) but is it really necessary for the actors to play the part of stage hands banging pieces of the set together to make sure they are safe enough for the other actors to walk on them? This is not a Parish Hall production, this is The Royal Shakespeare Company and this is The West End.
While some of the acting was pedestrian it’s hard to comment on the performances when what they had to work with was so weak. If anything, they are to be commended for trying to bring some life to this play.

This is a generous 3 as we were very disappointed both by the play and the theatre. I loved the book but the play is a pale shadow with none of the emotion and character development. Very disjointed and unconvincing.
We were sitting towards the back of the stalls under the Circle and the sound was very poor. We struggled to pick up what the characters ( particularly the women) were saying. Very annoying.
Theatre looks jaded and in need of some TLC!
Very expensive and a big disappointment.

An utterly dreadful experience. The worst play I have ever seen. The book is fabulous and this adaptation destroys it. Avoid .

Sound was bad, making the accents hard to get into.
The lead lady was not very good, very shrill, probably compounded by the sound problems.
Ben E King was like a boy band effort to cover a hit. There's only one Ben E King, but surely there's someone who could make a better job.
Disappointing.

hello, I don't recognise the BB designation. if you are 6 & 7 B in the stalls you are dead centre of the auditorium and 1 row back from the front. It is not a big theatre so row B in stalls, dress or upper circle would be good. Enjoy the show.
Skrevet 30. august 2022
Is the view from the grand circle restricted? It says it’s not but I’m worried that we won’t be able to see the stage that well. I’m looking at seats in row b. Would I be better off booting the stalls and having one of us restricted and someone not? We’re going to see a comedian so being able to see him isn’t a must. Thank you
Skrevet 5. desember 2019
I did not sit in Grand circle so cannot answer
Skrevet 7. januar 2020
Does anyone know how good the seats are W15 W16 in the stalls
Skrevet 11. desember 2018
Looking at the seating plan W is second to last row so the view will be restricted. Personally I would go for the Dress circle as you get to see the whole stage and the musicians for Don Quixote are high up and I enjoyed seeing them.
Definitely go to see it though and if those are the only seats left you’ll still have a great time.

Does any one know how good the view is for seat W14 in the stalls
Skrevet 11. desember 2018
I think the website has a photograph of the stage from every seat but, as stated elsewhere it depends on who is in front of you. It will also depend on the show as to whether seeing the whole stage is important.

Wanting to book have a choice of B5 and 6 or C12 and 13
Which are the best for viewing. Off to see Young Frankenstein in October 2017
Many thanks

Are we allowed to bring in any sorts of drinks or snacks from home? I hear popcorn is not allowed, wondering if there is anything else!
Skrevet 27. august 2017
We took in some snacks, fruit cups & sweets & no one said anything. Very friendly staff.

We are leaving London on the day we see this performance at 11am and will have our suitcases (small). Is there a cloakroom, or somewhere we will be able to leave our baggage?
Skrevet 15. august 2017
Yes, just ask at the cloakroom.
Skrevet 19. august 2017
Hi,
I'm trying to decide on seats and would like to know if anyone has had any experience in the follow seats especially if there is anything blocking your visibility of the stage:
P1-2
R15-16
Q19-20 ,R17-18
Thank you
Skrevet 22. februar 2017
We were fortunate to be in the third row
Skrevet 21. mars 2017
Nobody seems to be mentioning this, but is the language "modern" as well as the adaptation!? I would not go if it is, so please let me know if they are true to the Bard's original language. Thank you!
Skrevet 16. juli 2016
Hi original language but added humour updates the version to the 1950s era . Variation retains interest but does not alter meaning.
Skrevet 16. juli 2016
How large are the seats in Garrick Theatre?Specifically the Stalls section.
Skrevet 9. januar 2016
Similar to seats in all London theaters. My husband is 6' and was fine.
