The story is that he was poor in the end of his life. So, when he died the officers of his battalion donated money to build this monument. He was pretty much a forgotten soldier.
It is located on the way down to the Royal Mile

Duke of York Monument ist ein großes Denkmal. Riesen groß bis zum Himmel und schön. Es befindet sich auf der bekanntesten Stelle.

The column stretches well into the sky and it’s superbly located over the steps. I would describe it as imposing. Recommended.

This ridiculously tall column and statue is in tribute to Prince Frederick, Duke of York, the second son of King George III. Known mainly as the commander-in-chief of the British Army during the French Revolutionary Wars and for his great debts, it was suggested the height of this column allowed him to escape his creditors. The statue of the duke surmounting the column is so high up that it’s impossible to get a good view.

One of the British nursery rhymes is "The Grand Old Duke Of York" and there is a tribute to the Duke of York.

It is located just off the Mall next to the ICA about halfway between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

Not to be confused with our current Duke of York this is worth checking out if you are in the area.

Trafalgar Square has Nelson's Column, the route from Piccadilly to St James's Park planned by John Nash has the tall column with the Duke of York at the top.

The Column is the architectural centrepiece of the fine 19th century Carlton House Terrace at the end of Waterloo Place which has other statues worth exploring including that of the explorer Robert Scott and Edward VII, with the Guards Crimean Memorial and Florence Nightingale at the other end.

The Duke's memory is also enshrined in the children's song and game 'The Grand Old Duke of York'.

This is a pretty tall column, but the Duke is very tiny on top.

This could have been done better, but it is great for a landmark.

There are other nicer statues behind him.

Everyone knows about Nelson's column, but here, only a short walk away, is the monument to the Duke of York, standing on top of the steps which lead from St James's Park to Waterloo Place and up to Piccadilly or along to Trafalgar Square and that other column.

Designed as part of an urban ensemble with the buildings of Carlton House Terrace alongside built in the early 19th century, it is worth visiting and using this route from St James's Park to Trafalgar Square and the West End, as an alternative to Admiralty Arch which is a sea of construction works at the moment while it is being converted into a hotel.

Superb column and a significant height which stands majestically over Waterloo Place. Great for photos.
