The building housing the museum dates from the 18th century and was originally a workhouse. The museum contains fascinating exhibits from each period since then which document not only the house's history but also give a good impression of what life was like in the area at each time. The garden is peaceful and very interesting as it has a variety of exotic medicinal herbs growing in it.

Vestry House is a wonderful place. Beautifully restored with a rich history. I enjoyed learning about the local area in this authentic setting. I understand there's a large archive available on request. There was a travelling exhibition on Suffragette art & craft work when we visited, very nicely curated. I am looking to revisit during the spring/summer to have a closer look at the traditional kitchen gardens and surrounding walled garden when it's in full bloom. This garden was a unexpected high-lite for me. The gift shop has a gorgeous selection of items from local E17 makers.
Friendly helpful staff on hand

An interesting museum about the poor houses in the oldest part of Walthamstow, which was a village outside of London before London consumed it. There are household items on display from old days, WW2 rationing info, Victorian living room, toy museum, dress, a jail cell, an an automobile from a local inventor.... and a nice garden in the old vestry house. It was a fascinating museum, and I learned a lot about the history here. I combined this with a tour of Gods own Junkyard neon signs, a walk to see street art, and a visit to the William Morris Museum. I spent probably 1.5 hours here.

The Vestry is a very interesting museum of local life. It's worth a trip to Walthamstow. The surrounding area also shows how the place has changed over the last couple of hundred years.

It’s the second time that I have been to this museum that is set in a grade ll listed building that was built in 1730 and used to be a workhouse and later became the local police station for the village in the 1850s.
The exhibits are a real eclectic mix and show the history of the area.
For the old car enthusiasts there is one of the first cars built in 1892 a Bremer and details about the London to Brighton runs etc.
They also have lots of different exhibitions going on through the year and at the moment there is an interesting one called “An Ode to Epping Forest”. The artist Rachel Lillie looks at the forests history and the hidden stories about the place.
If you ring up and make an appointment, there are also thousands of historic photographs from across the borough to look through.
Outside there is a tranquil garden to wander around in too which would be lovely on a warm summer’s day – look out for the old post box and roman sarcophagus.
Finally a world about the museum staff/volunteers – they are really friendly and helpful as well as being very knowledgeable. They are a real credit to the place.
The museum is only a ten minute walk from the tube station at Walthamstow Central, but it’s a walk into a bygone time and you can learn a lot about the area’s history by visiting Vestry House.
Note that the museum entry is free and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday.

Just ten minutes walk from the Walthamstow Central tube station, is this an interesting small museum. It can be well combined with other places of interest at Walthamstow. This former workhouse has a wonderful setting, rural almost, with a garden, and a magnificent Tudor house and old church yard around the corner.

The museum has made most of it's local history, though some of it looks a bit tired and there are no fancy interactive displays or activities for children. The garden is an extra bonus, it is well kept and pretty.

Perhaps the sign for the entrance could be clearer, it doesn't stand out enough as 'Entrance Museum'. The staff is friendly, though they give you a quick round through all of the ground floor of the museum before you start, which takes the surprise element away. Perhaps it would be best to hand out a clear floor plan. There is a little shop with nice books and gifts.

Having visited the William Morris Gallery, we were made aware of Vestry House to which admission was also free. Don't look a gift horse etc., but this was not the easiest to find. Not to be deterred, we persisted and were amply rewarded. These two establishments are rather like chalk and cheese, but if asked for a preference I would find it most difficult to make a choice. Walthamstow is exceedingly fortunate.

What a great little museum. We were warmly greeted and made to feel welcome with a little bit of orientation about what we would find. The history of the little museum is fascinating with lots to see. I really enjoyed the temporary exhibition as well as learning more about the museum's history as a poor house. I was very impressed by this museum. We were there at Easter and there were lots of activities for children and it was evident that they were really enjoying themselves.

Great find in interesting area of Walthamstow. Look out for the bit of the historic and now disappeared Euston arch outside. Lots to see in the old Work House. Interesting publications in the shop.

This is one of those gems that you come across in the backstreets - a little purpose built poor house with some very interesting exhibitions. The staff/volunteers are very knowledgeable and there is a little shop.
