Lovely place for chamber music
okt. 2021 • Alene
As I planned an itinerary for a solo trip to London, several of Wigmore Hall's concerts caught my attention (indeed, the music is not limited to the weekends). I chose a Saturday night chamber music performance wherein the program was a re-creation of concerts performed at the National Gallery during WWII.

It was a superb performance. All of the musicians were supremely talented. The acoustics in the hall were outstanding for chamber music, and the intimate size of the venue made it possible to more easily see the connections between the performers.

At the interval, the bar in the restaurant was open for drinks. I was impressed by how quickly the staff worked through the queue and enjoyed a glass of bubbles.

The program for the performance was a separate purchase. It was worth the small fee; the information contained within about the history of the concert series and the notes on that evening's music were informative and well-written.

The only downside, at least in the first row of the balcony where I was seated, was the extraordinarily small pitch. I am of average height and was slightly uncomfortable. A tall person might be in agony! The wall of the balcony is also on the high side; next time, I will sit in a higher row of the balcony or on the main floor.

Easy access to the venue from multiple tube stops nearby. A lovely evening of chamber music in a beautiful venue!

Rest was understaffed, no manager present to complain to, service was slow and standard of food poor, which sadly reflected in the performance and standoffish ushers along with a lack lustre performance.

An exceptional recital hall with excellent English Art Deco styling
jan. 2020
This concert hall is in the centre of Marleybone, in what used to be the medical district, at the crossing of Wigmore Street and Wimpole Street. It is right near the Royal Society of Medicine, which is in and of itself worth a visit for the magnificent medical library. It is hidden in plain sight.

You would walk right by it unless you knew to look. The beauty is inside, and is both visual and acoustic. This is not a large hall. It is bigger than a chamber music stage, but smaller than what you would expect for a full orchestra. Built in the high Victorian era, it was rebuilt and renewed at the turn of the 20th century with wonderful Art Deco flourishes.

It holds only a few hundred people. There is a sense of intimacy in the audience and with the stage. We heard Purcell and Rameau, both intstrumental (early instruments) and vocal. The acoustics were excellent, especially for the vocals, but the harpsichord, lute, horns, recorders and strings were exceptionally well balanced.

The repertoire is unique and subsidized tickets are available at two levels for those under 25 years of age and those under 35. There is a commitment to making the concerts accessible to young people.

This is a treasure. Most everyone who likes classical music will find a program of interest, and will enjoy both the music and the experience.

A hidden gem if you like just a bit of high brow classical

If you are visiting London and you want to enjoy something a little different, then this may appeal to you.

The Wigmore Hall showcases talented classical musicians playing the kind of stuff that none of us people off the street have ever heard of. As you can tell I am no classical buff, but I can appreciate excellent musicianship and I know it does me good to enjoy diverse experiences. So, if you are similar, then this may be something you would like.

We attended an afternoon recital, which is an hour duration. The Hall was not full by any means, but the musicians were warmly received. There is a bar/restaurant available and the staff are friendly. All-in-all, it is well worth a visit. The afternoon performance is only £10 per ticket and is an hour well spent stepping into another world. You may even spot somebody famous in the audience as we did.

This is an inexpensive way to support up and coming musicians. In 10 years, seeing them may not be so affordable!

Best lied hall in the world.
des. 2019 • Alene
Wigmore hall has all the best singers performing, it seems they are queuing to perform there. I have visited the hall several times and the quality of programming is as high as it gets. The ticket prices are decent and availability is good if you buy tickets early. Many people enjoy the acoustics, I have my reservations.

Let me put this diplomatically: Wigmore hall’s acoustic does not exactly bring out the beauty of voices. The result is often harsh and hard. It’s always clear, but a male voice seems almost steely when heard from the back rows and the piano plays very loud. If you have sat through recitals in damped and muddy sounding halls, this is naturally a revelation.

One of the world's great recital rooms
okt. 2019
Although some people love the decor, the real feature of this venue are the acoustic and the repertoire. If you are taller than average, expect to be jammed into an uncomfortable position (or ask for an aisle seat). If you find the early 20th century decor a bit heavy, just shut your eyes and listen to the music. With a different concert virtually every day, there will be something to catch your attention. The restaurant downstairs is constantly good as well.

Wat een mooie hal! Je zit bijna altijd op een goede plaats omdat de hal niet groot is. Gemaakt voor kleine bezettingen, kamermuziek. Prachtige akoestiek. Prijzen zijn redelijk.
