On the corner of King William Street and Lombard Street stands this unique building. From the outside, it could be mistaken for something other than a parish church. The coffee shop just inside the doors is very popular. The website does not give much detail about its history.

The present building was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and built between 1716 and 1724. Though the Commission for Building Fifty New Churches (in London and the surroundings) was an organisation set up by Act of Parliament in England in 1711, it only built 12, and two, including this one, were rebuilds. These became known as the Queen Anne Churches.

The most famous person associated with this church is John Newton, evangelical, anti-slavery campaigner and hymn writer, who was the rector from 1780 to 1807. He was buried here with his wife but both were reinterred at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Olney in 1893. Only a few years later, the crypt was sold to the railway company that built Bank station and the bones of those still there were moved to Ilford. Amazingly, the building was then supported on steel girders from underneath and is now said to be stronger than before the work and no cracks developed.

Grade I listed, it had been threatened with demolition by the builders of Bank station. The baroque design with Corinthian capitals is well worth a quick visit if you are in the area.

Came across this whilst on a bus tour and the ornately gilded gates is what attracted me mostly to this building. The coat of arms of the Diocese of London I later found out is what is represented here.

I must have walked past this church many times, as have many City workers rushing backwards and forwards, especially to the entrance of Bank Station in front of it.

Opened in 1727, the church was designed by Sir Nicholas Hawksmoor, replacing the previous church destroyed in the Great Fire of London.

Externally, the church has an imposing, if severe, English Baroque facade; inside is an elegant square box embellished with classical features, organ, pulpit and chancel, providing a place for worship and for quiet contemplation. There are also several interesting memorials.

Originally there were galleries, but these were demolished in the 19th century and, where the staircases may have been located, is now a small and popular pop-up cafe.

Easy to miss, but worth visiting if you arein this part of the City.

We came across this wonderfully historical place quiet by chance when leaving Bank underground station. What attracted us to visit was the wonderful little coffee shop in the entrance hall. As we then discovered it was an Anglican church we went inside and to our surprise discovered it was in fact where John Newton, writer of 'Amazing Grace', had ministered. What a wonderful find!!! Beautifully kept church, and so peaceful in the busy commercial district. Well worth a visit.

Do not walk past. Go in. This church makes the best of its limited footprint. The height of the interior and decorative columns and ceilings glorious.

As other reviewers noted, right by busy entrance to Bank Tube, corner of King William St and Lombard St - can't get much more "City" than that. I like the fact that there is a pop-up coffee stall, providing sustenance and getting people used to being on church ground (see also St Mary Aldermary). Along with City publications, cards etc, it makes it a living, current space. Particularly like the timepiece inside and specific engraved reference from TS Eliot

This church has a quiet charm and peacefulness emphasised by it history and general lack of embellishment. It is surrounded by the City of London whose god is mammon. It is even on a busy crossroad junction and opposite its door the men and women of that City stream out of the aptly named Bank underground station. The church delivers peace and rest. it is worth a visit. You can even grab a coffee in its doorway from a pop up coffee stall. The church doth move with the times!

Wonderful compact respite in this financial ghetto.
The coffee stall outside the door is not a great start though.
Peace descends as you sit in this small church.
The alter cloth could be improved.

This is a lovely church at the heart of the City. It is less than impressive from the outside and is relatively small and square with lots of black wood, amazing carvings and plasterwork. The pulpit is superb and it has a coffee shop in the entrance.
