Saw Beethoven's 5th last night performed by the London Philharmonic.
That itself was fantastic. Just a shame about the facilities for punters outside the main auditorium.
The signs still state that the cloakroom was in the basement, as usual - when arriving I eventually found out from a member of staff that there was now a temporary cloakroom on level 4. So you had loads of people trying to fit into the 'singing' lift to get up there from the basement. Bloke there asked me if I could put my coat in my tiny bag - it's a cloakroom!! (not to mention it's obvious it couldn't fit). Handed over a £2 coin for the privilege - "Card Only"! Utter purgatory with the folk who couldn't work out where this place was walking and waiting for lifts taking ages, then of course once they have left their coats/bags- those who have seats on the other side of the auditorium have to go all the way back down by stairs or lift, across and all the way back up the other side. Ridiculous.
The staff at the 'Central Bar' (main bar on the ground floor) were hideously rude - neanderthals grunting at you, only seemingly capable of monosyllabic noises (though happy to have 'banter' with their workmates while meant to be serving). Specimens like this should not be employed this type of venue, especially when charging £8 for a single vodka and coke. I ended up walking off - it was more like being served at an illegal drum and bass party than the Royal Festival Hall.
The only positive comment I have bar the concert itself was the Eastern European woman that served me at the bar on the 4th floor, green side was very pleasant.
As I say, the concert was fantastic. The show and the punters deserve much better.

My family and I attended Brazilian drum workshop. We travelled from Hertfordshire to attend and do had put in a lot of effort and money to support this exciting event. We found out number of places and then stood in a queue for 50 mins as were told only 40 places. In the queue we met others who had also travelled a fair distance and had decided to arrive early to ensure they would get in! What a waste of time as the staff to our disbelief let in everyone over 100 people. A frustrating experience developed. Too noisy and frustrating . The leader was quite angry at times and too much time was wasted on trying to listen to him feel the need to share history and him singing. Would have been better to run two sessions and learn more about the individual drums eg their role , names, sounds possible , how to play correctly eg which part of hand or stick, different rhythms creating moods. Staff were clearly at fault for not controlling numbers.disappointi as billed as drum workshop.

Recently went to the Bert Jansch 80th birthday tribute at the Royal Festival Hall.
We arrived in our seats with ten minutes to spare. After the concert had started, (about five minutes in), a couple came down and told us we were in the wrong seats. We showed them our tickets and told them we weren't.
After about another ten minutes, well into the first half e steward came down and told us we were in the wrong seats, so we got up and started to look for the ones she told us were ours, in another part of the balcony. She didn't show us where to go and we wandered around in utter darkness trying to find them, unsurprisingly finding that there were already other people sitting in them.
Eventually we found an escape exit which took us down to the ground floor and where we went back to the ticket office. After some time we were told that we had been in the right seats and they would take us back to them.
We effectively missed a huge chunk of the first half of the concert which was a big disappointment and NOT the kind of treatment I would have expected from a so called prestigious venue. If someone had apologised to us properly and explained what happened I could have been more understanding, however, so far we have heard absolutely nothing from the customer relations department.

First visit here to see the marvellous Sir Patrick Stewart on his book tour. Loved the vibrant food market outside the hall- once inside the hall itself was buzzing, light and airy. I loved the singing lift- I’m still raving about it now. I even went In it twice and got a video.
I was sat on the highest row and unfortunately the view wasn’t amazing. I think the venue could do with a bigger screen or better quality as being so high up you rely on it. It was not the best definition. I loved the talk and the unique venue. I felt it was very reasonably priced.

We were meeting some friends in London yesterday and decided to meet in the RFH bar at 2.30pm (as we used to back in the ‘90s as architecture students).
We were REALLY disappointed with the experience of what was once a lovely venue. Clearly the bar has been remodelled with removal of the steps down to it, which completely changes the feel - not for the better. Add the poor lighting and cheap tables and chairs and the whole place now lacks the class it once had.
To add to this the bar then closed at 3pm, which seems bizarre considering how busy the whole area was. We weren’t overly concerned about having to take our trade elsewhere as the person working was borderline rude plus we were given plastic glasses.
I wanted to show a couple of our friends the balcony overlooking the river, but this was closed too.
As probably the most important modern building in London and an icon of socialist architecture for the people the RFH is a shadow of its former self.

Had an excellent Windrush concert, amazing orchestra and choir, Brinsley Ford was as always superb. Great to be a part of history to celebrate the 75th year of the pioneering, courageous people who answered the invitation from the motherland to rebuild post war Britain

We just did a walk through on a walking tour. The place looked like a good place to get a bite to eat and relax.

The Royal Festival Hall, built in 1951, is located on the south bank of the Thames next to the Hungerford Bridge. The concert hall offers 2,700 seats. We visited the Festival Hall for the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Klaus Mäkelä (1996) performing Shostakovich’s Violin 1; Larcher’s Symphony 2; and Mahler’s Symphony 10.
We found the London Philharmonic Orchestra to be professional. As director, Mäkelä is a rising star. Shostakovich and Mahler’s Adagio of Symphony 10 was performing well. Symphony 2 of Thomas Larcher (1963) was a horrible disaster.
His ‘Kenotaph’ is an orgy of ugly loud noise. Music for a lunatic asylum in 2210. It is music to avoid by all means. The extended orchestra often reaching 100dB. During several parts of the performance we had to put our fingers in our ears to avoid hearing damage. Any band of saw-chains makes better music.
We sincerely regretted that we attended the concert.

Concert fabulous. Rest of experience awful. No cloakroom, limited toilets but worst was food from cafeteria. Inedible and nowhere to sit down. Truly ghastly food. Rude staff. No knowledge of allergens. Long wait. And expensive. Will not attend concert hall again unless all this improves. Very sad as it used to be amazing. Having said all that.. the music was great

Has anyone had any experience of getting cancellation tickets for a sold out performance either beforehand or on the night?
Hello.
I've never been to this building and I'm interested in using the singing lift. Does anybody know if I have to pay to enter the Blue Side of the building and take the lift?
Thanks in advance.

hi guys. question about seats in the RAH. We are family of four. Is it better to sit in the balcony or the rear stalls. Seats are limited for the show in question so we will be about half way back in either. Any advice please?

This question is not about the Royal Festival Hall (RFH), it is about the Royal Albert Hall (RAH).
I have been to the Royal Albert Hall, a couple of years ago. The answers posted here from others should be noted as they are from the people who have been there more recently.

Hello,
can anyone tell me how long the show lasts. Is there an interval. We are going to the 7.30pm show so what time would we be walking out? Need to know so i can book a babysitter for the baby and give her a more accurate time. thanks in advance. px

Saw this last year. Loved it. All timings reported in other replies are accurate. Interval about half hour after start, and total showtime about 1.5 hours. Note that last year people were not allowed to take drinks into the theatre. You will understand why when you get inside!

Southbank Centre is a fundamentally a concert hall with other cultural events throughout the year. It is not a leisure centre, there are no gym facilities, or swimming pool.

My girlfriend and I have concession tickets for an event, but one of us has misplaced our relevant ID. Are they strict about checking them on the night? If so, is it possible to just pay extra to change it to a full price ticket?
