It probably wasn't the best day to visit as it was raining, but it's a huge cemetery and made an interesting walk around. A shame there were quite a few brambles around.

Brompton Cemetery is a really old cemetery so it’s fascinating to see all the older stones and burial areas. Worth an hour stroll thru.

Walked around here one sunny morning with my friends Alex, Maddie and Ellie. What a lovely, atmospheric place it is to stroll around. Emily Pankhurst's grave was there, so we had a look at that, and we're shocked to see the only tribute to her was "wife of...". Shocking to see.

Entered by chance, trying to reach Stamford Bridge Stadium.
It is a particular place that "kidnaps" you.
Walking here is truly relaxing and the presence of animals and wild flowers gives the place a unique charm.
Absolutely recommended to stop on a bench to look and listen to the surrounding environment.

The history is so rich here. And so is the community. Regular joggers and dog walkers saying hello to each other, families going for walks. The cemetery has great staff and volunteers happy to help and there are free maps at the office. Some of the “famous” graves are quite hidden but that’s part of it. The diversity in graces is incredible too. Polish, Russian Orthodox, assassinated Russian, Native American Chief, very wealthy and the very famous.
A lot of areas are overgrown but the area is a wildlife sanctuary with badger, squirrels and foxes so it is on purpose to provide an oasis.

Needed to spend time close to Chelsea harbour, having walked through the cemetery every day decided to take a detailed look at the 100 marked graves of significance. In particular Emmeline Pankhurst and Elizabeth Le Blonde, first english woman filmaker. Noted no plaque for playwright, screenwriter and Auther Terence Feely but blue plaque on his grave . Cafe at gate very good. Dr John Snow who cleared Cholera in London by introducing clean water fountains.Definatley knew something!

Brompton Cemetery is one of " The Magnificent Seven " Cemeteries that surround London.

Highgate Cemetery is the one that gets most focus but I am finding that those of the other 6 that I have visited so far are well deserving of a visit.

Brompton Cemetery was opened in 1840 & burials are still taking place. It is run by The Royal Parks & entry is free via either the rather grand main gate on Old Brompton Rd. or the gate on Fulham Rd.

North Lodge Cafe sits right next to the main gate & has a sunny patio area. Here , also , are public toilets although they are not immediately obvious , being inside the cafe.

I took a District Line tube from Edgware Rd to West Brompton Station & found the main gate a stone's throw away .

Prior to visiting I had read some info regarding the layout , designated walking routes & 100 of the most significant persons buried there , all of which I printed out.

However , as soon as I walked in I put all thought of any orderly search right away & just decided to ramble about as the fancy took me. There are restricted paths for dog walkers & cyclists.
Incidentally , I noted that some dog walkers did not stick rigidly to them & also did not have them on leads.

The main path runs straight through to a very impressive Chapel & before reaching it you will pass the magnificent Colonnades on either side which then open to enfold The Great Circle which was intended to remain open & tombless but is , in fact , covered in them..

There is a smaller part of the cemetery behind the Chapel & then the Fulham Rd ,
. entrance.

It was a particularly good time to visit as there were swathes of Cow Parsley & Bluebells & Buttercups in flower.

Just poking above the trees you can see Chelsea Football Stadium.

I was struck by how many beautifully glossy, black crows were in evidence which added a touch of Gothic Horror. ( Great for some creative photography ).
Also plenty of pigeons who seemed to particularly favour an ornate mausoleum which sits to the right of the main path.

The Grey Squirrels are very bold which means they must get well fed by visitors.

There are not many mausoleums but one not to miss is that of Hannah Courtoy which is in the Egyptian style.
Also see the superb lion atop the tomb of John " Gentleman " Jackson , one time pugilist & bodyguard to George IV.

One area of the cemetery is devoted to members of The Brigade of Guards & has a monument.

Not far away is a monument to Chelsea Pensioners with a listing of colonial wars in which they took part.

There is a garden of remembrance , gated & railed around.

Worth noting , too are some impressive trees - a big Cedar of Lebanon near the Chapel being one.

An amazing place to which I will certainly return to.

Stumbled across this amazing cemetery whilst staying in Earls Court. What an amazing, peaceful place. There are many information boards which make the visit more interesting. Amazing history
We did have to leave as the long grass sparked my husbands hayfever!
