Close 2 hours early on a normal work day without updating on Google maps nor on their website. Arrived, waited for 5 mins for a staff to come and told us to leave at 19:30. We travelled more than 1 hour to get there with train. Absolutely disappointing and not worth wasting our time.

The Castle is an iconic north London climbing centre, with rope climbing (top rope, lead and auto belay) and bouldering available. As with any other gym in London, you'll need to sign a waiver and answer a few safety questions if it's your first visit. If you're hiring shoes, or a harness, you can hire them from the small cafe opposite the entrance to the main building.
At peak times, the centre can get very busy, so try and pop in at a quieter moment to enjoy, if you can (late morning/early afternoon on week days). Remember also to take a pound coin for the lockers.
The variety of routes here is good and they change fairly frequently, so there's always a new challenge (you can find the setting rota behind reception). There is also a new outdoor bouldering area, which is lovely to relax in on sunny days. My only gripe is that a larger warm-up area would be helpful.
Check out the garden - fresh veg is grown here to make food in the cafe! Coffee here is great, if you're in need of a break, and there are plenty of vegan food options.
I find it odd that past reviews mention issues with staff? Everyone I meet at The Castle has been friendly and helpful.

Great place, good variety for bouldering and top roping and lead. Always open. Don't understand some of the negative reviews, staff have always been super friendly and helpful. They do have safety requirements when climbing or supervising so check website before going if first time.

Awful experience. If you put any health condition on the registration form they will invent a reason why you can't be allowed to climb. I have years of experience but they told me I am not handling the rope correctly. Not that they asked any one else, not even complete novices to prove their experience in any way, just me.

I boulder regularly with my daughter in Hemel Hempstead, we planned a trip to London for an appointment and thought we would go bouldering in the afternoon. Tow days beforehand I phoned the centre to check if I needed anything, explained we bouldered regularly what did we need to do if we wanted to have a go there, explained just boulderer's not climbers. Was told sign a waiver, turn up and pay. I confirmed nothing else needed. On the day (due to severe weather warning) phoned again before setting across London (centre is a bit out of the way for a tube) staff again confirmed absolutely nothing else needed turn up sing a waiver and pay.
Arrived at the centre signed the waiver (takes a long time the form seems to take a lot of extra unnecessary personal details). Went to pay was asked , "have you climbed with ropes?" honestly said "no we are just boulderers" was told "then you can't boulder, it is in the same room as roped climbing and you might start climbing and fall, our insurance wont cover us, we can't allow it unless you attend a five hour training session". Ruined the day, mentioned the two calls, the wasted journey etc. The staff didn't care one iota, no hint of an apology. Terrible thoughtless (to the point of extremely rude) staff that couldn't care less.

Do not get me wrong, The Castle is a brilliant climbing centre. There are bags of routes for anyone, whether your into bouldering, top roping or leading; there is so much choice. But the place has one caveat that lets it down every time.
Simply, its the staff. The way they treat paying customers taints the entire centre. I’ve been an instructor in the outdoor adventurous sport world for a number of years, been mountaineering as a hobby since I can remember; I have never met a group of people in the climbing world more arrogant and unwelcoming than the staff at The Castle Climbing Centre. Its laughable.
I could forgive poor customer service if it were an isolated incident, but every time? Without fail, each visit, I am met with a cocky adolescent child at the front desk (who most likely couldn’t walk when I was climbing Lhotse, but thats by the by) who exudes an unwelcoming, patronising demeanour that is just laughable when I'm actively trying to give them money. I haven’t had an interaction with a staff member that left me satisfied as a paying customer. It is unwelcoming and would dissuade me from pursuing the sport if I were starting new.
Arrogance is an ugly trait in those that should be championing the sport. You let the whole industry down by behaving that way towards your customers, as I see you do with everyone, including those climbing for the first time. Having visited quite a few times now, I will no longer be doing so. There are plenty more centres in london with walls just as good. Its a shame.

This climbing centre is great! There are plenty of good bouldering walls for all abilities and there are never ending rooms. You can also climb outside in a really pretty setting. Staff weren’t particularly friendly but other than that, a great experience!

Came here for a day trip up from Reading where my usual climbing centre is. The staff are extremely friendly here and know exactly how to deal with people. There is so much going on, there's a rock climbing wall in every corner. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to going again in the future.

So much is good about the Castle. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is great, and the array of climbing is wonderful. I enjoy climbing here.
The only real downsides (apart from the often leaking roof - a downside of being a listed building) is how busy the whole place gets and how difficult it can be to grab good routes and consistently project a set.
A last snag is the grading - it seems off the standard of other centres feeling a little easier. It’s great at the time, but when you climb other places, you realise your a good letter grade lower than you thought you were.
