10-Dec-23: Visited via the TFL Hidden Underground tour, which is very well organised, with enthusiastic staff, who are very informative and happy to answer any questions along the way, over and above the vast amounts of information they share during the tour. I'd already been on the Charing Cross tour, and I think that one was better as it's more "behind the scenes" of an active station as well as "hidden" bits, whereas this is purely "hidden" as the station is wholly inactive now, barring the odd engineering train every so often. There are LOTS of steps to descend / ascend on this tour, so be sure you're up for that. However, they don't rush anyone so it doesn't matter if you take your time. Will definitely do another station in future.

Worst tube station ever, very dated and in need of modernisation, waited ages for a train, gave up in the end and walked. TFL sucks

This was fascinating. Very atmospheric, and a chance to see what so few people have and yet which played such an important part on British history. The guides (Paul and Paul) were very knowledgeable and friendly and put auditory effects to excellent use. The stairs do take a bit of climbing back up (around 130 of them) but nobody rushes you and it was entirely do-able even by someone not that fit. Even on a very hot summer day (30 degrees) the platforms were pretty chilly so take a jacket. We learned loads, however, and the wow factor of standing in an Edwardian station is real.

I was really looking forward to this tour after seeing the pictures on the London Transport Museum website, all those dark tunnels and even an old tube train in the tunnel. Unfortunatly it was nothing like the photos and i felt very disappointed. Certainly wasnt worth the £44 entrance fee.

Booked this visit as a present for my son's birthday and it was a very good experience. We only went to London for the day to attend this and we were not disappointed. The tour is very informative and the information is well delivered by Simon and Tommy. The history of the underground and in particular this station keeps you interested from the start. The tour lasts about 75 minutes and be warned there are 163 steps up and down to tackle so you might get out of breath. Remember also to take Photo I.D. as i forgot mine but was eventually allowed to continue after proving my identity. My son and I both really enjoyed this tour and it was well worth travelling the length of the country to take part. I am sure that in the future we will look at other hidden London trips. Thanks again to Simon and Tommy

The Hidden London tours are part of the London Transport Museum. This was the first of the tours that we had ever done with these people and they are great.
For Aldwych, the station was never used very much as a tube station and was eventually closed in 1994 rather than spend the funds to change out the wooden elevators and other required maintenance.
During the wars, while much of the Underground stayed active, Aldwych was closed and used both as a shelter and also as a safe storage location for the artwork from various museums. You get to see photos of the station during this time.
During the tour, you get an in depth history of the station and get to walk down to the platforms. You also get to see how the station has been used after it was permanently closed both as a movie set and also as a place for the station designers to test ideas that could be used in new stations under construction such as on the Jubilee line.
Neil, Simon and Tommy were great guides.

Hidden London Aldwych tube tour is one of the best (now attended 6), from the front entrance to the disused tunnels, fake posters and interconnecting door between customer elevators, its a sheer treat

I got a splinter on the hand rail but I am taking this as a good thing as technically a part of this old abandoned train station lives in me. There was a lot of stairs to get down and back up from the platform, so bare that in mind if you are unable to do stairs. The tour is really interesting and I recommend! We also arrived a bit late as the ticket states to be 15 minutes early. Despite this, there was still a staff member waiting at the entrance for us and we were allowed on the tour still

I took a Hidden London Tour down here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The station was in service until 1994 when it was fully closed although one platform had closed years earlier.
Seeing what the tunnels had been used for was very interesting (ranging from storing the Elgin Marbles to testing out designs as well as filming).
The station is still connected to the Tube network with a connection at Holborn.

I had wanted the tour for years, the tour guides and staff know so much and they answered every question I asked, the station is in good condition. I highly recommend taking the tour

Hi, any one know why age limit is 14? I would like to visit with my daughter who is turning 14 in few months. Are they strict or is there a leverage? Thanks

Hi adam!! If you search britmovietours they also do tours of Aldwych, normally about once a month if that helps you, I went with them in feb and it was amazing!!
