We had been meaning to visit the museum for years, as my father in law was in the River Police during the war. We made an appointment with the curator and at last made the trip to Wapping. The museum is housed within the police station where the river police are based, so the curator Rob took us into it after meeting outside. It is quite small, but packed with fascinating articles and information which you could easily spend quite some time viewing. Rob was brilliant; he gave us an amazing talk about how the force was formed, what life was like on the river at that time, and various gruesome events from the age. He also talked about the SS Princess Alice disaster on the Thames in 1878, when 650 lives were lost. His in depth knowledge and way of telling a story made it all come to life. My husband was really moved by the occasion, and delighted to have at last made the trip. Rob finished by opening the back of the museum so that we could see the river - as it was a beautiful day, the view was spectacular. A day we shall never forget, thank you.

We found this little gem of a museum by accident. We just happened to be walking past on a day when it was open to the public. I think it is generally only open by appointment.
It is a very small museum crammed with exhibits but the most interesting time was spent talking to the mostly retired policemen on duty. Well worth a visit!

On this Open Day there were several former officers there to share their knowledge and experiences of life as a river police officer. My grandson wants to be a policeman so was enthralled with their tales of pirates and lifesaving.
There are some brilliant artefacts and the whole place is full of history.
I was born within sight of the building, although on the other side of the Thames, so it has a special significance for me, but it will hold an interest for anyone with a love of history and London.

The curator made our visit a great experience with his knowledge of the history and items in this amazing little museum, great views over the Thames and details of the current marine policing unit. We visited as a small group of Retired Police officers and staff.

Had an excellent afternoon here. Rob was our guide and told us the history of the River Police with great humour. Plenty of stories and anecdotes. Very interesting and informative. Highly recommended.

Was lucky enough to visit this tiny museum as part of an organised group which is the only way to see it. The retired Police Officer who is joint curator really knows his stuff and is obviously passionate about it. Fascinating to know that "Police Station" and the Policeman's "Beat" terms originated from the River Police. Really interesting talk by the Curator followed by a look round at the many interesting objects, photos and paintings that have been crammed into this relatively small space. No catering or toilet facilities so prepare before you go. A worthwhile visit. Easy walking distance from St Katherine's Dock or Wapping Station.

The Thames River Police or Marine Police Force is now officially known as ''Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit'' and Thames River Police Museum is the correct title of its museum, so I have asked TA to amend this listing accordingly. Also, I am disappointed that when I wrote a detailed review of my visit with a group of Friends of the Royal Academy at the same time as asking for this place to receive a listing, it was turned down yet when someone else comes along it gets listed.
The Thames River Police is the oldest organised police force in existence, as you will find out if you are fortunate to be able to visit this fascinating museum which is sited in a former workshop overlooking the eponymous river.
Currently it is open by appointment only or to organised group tours and it also takes part in 'Open House London' when it will be open to all. This year's Open House takes place on 17th and 18th September.
We were given a most interesting talk by one of the curators before having time to look around independently. One of two retired officers who keeps this place alive, it was a real pleasure to be recipients of his vast knowledge of the fascinating history of river policing.
Easy to get to it is very close to Wapping Station or is only a short walk along Wapping High Street from the Tower/Tower Bridge/St. Katharine Dock area and there is a nice riverside pub/restaurant, ''Captain Kidd'' a few steps away.

Rob Jeffries the curator was a mine of information and he produced all the relevant documents about my friend's grandfather. He was very informative and was able to talk about every object in this small museum. Well worth a look if you want to know about much of London's history from a different point of view.

I visited this as part of London Open House. It is a museum which is part of a working police station. So normally you will have to write to them to access it.It contains a lot of memorabilia and information specifically about the section of the force which monitors the river.
