The Capital Ring is a cycleway/path that circles the city of London. In theory you can walk round the whole of London exploring.

The paths are in pretty good condition and you get to see a wide variety of scenery as you go along.

Great way to improve your mental health!

Having been to London on numerous occasions and being interested in walking the Capital ring seemed a good proposition. We chose section one also because of the good views over the Thames. We started by walking the Woolwich foot tunnel from DLR King George V. The walk is one of the longer sections ending in Falconwood. The walk is mainly in parks and woodland which is nice for your senses and feet.
There were no real problems along the way. We had to detour at one place where the passage was closed and you had to be observant so as not to miss signposts. Capital ring signs are often added to Green chain ones. We found it very useful to have the itinerary downloaded in our phones. We skipped the last loop before Falconwood and took the road straight to our lunch at the Harvester.

I absolutely loved following this inner route around London. I mostly followed the Saunders guide but sometimes found it better to ignore the sectors advised in the interests of making good rail connections. It is usually possible to walk two sectors consecutively. The route plotters have done a fantastic job in directing walkers through parkland and in minimising the dull residential bits - of which there are some of course. So excited was I to finish the Ring (yes, Wagner must have felt similarly elated) that I have now embarked upon big brother The London Loop. Covid has put paid to that for the time being, but I can't wait to get back on the road.

Walked section 11 of the Capital Ring route today - 6 miles / 9.6km from Hendon Central to Highgate. It's early in the year for walks, but despite some mud, slippery slopes and barren trees it was a very pleasant walk. The start is a little unpromising, skirting around Finchley Road and the North Circular (arguably, one of London's grimmest sights). But things look up as soon as the park and canal hopping takes you to lovely Hamstead. Some lovely woods towards the end of the section. The Capital Ring is a green and engaging introduction to some of the areas of London that we rarely frequent. I wander what section we'll walk next.

We decided to walk sections 12 & 13 (Highgate to Hackney Wick) of the Capital Ring today. What an amazing experience!

Section 12 (8 km) takes you through such beautiful greenery you have to pinch yourself to check you are still in London. The disused railway track near Crouch Hill is fascinating including the ominous figure of the spriggan (a type of goblin) on a railway arch.

More stunning nature meets the city at Woodberry wetlands. Section 12 eventually finishes in Stoke Newington with its cute cafes and boutiques and fascinating Abney Park Cemetery.

After Section 12's upmarket greenery, Section 13 (6.4km) makes for an interesting contrast: it's edgier and more cosmopolitan though still largely green. We passed through residential Stamford Hill with its large Hasidic Jewish community before the route hit wildlife-rich Hackney marshes and a tangle of houseboat-flecked canals.

The whole route should have been 14.4km but by the time we had done various detours and walked to Stratford station we had racked up nearly 20 km (a pretty flat 20 km though). We had printed out the Tfl route guidance, which was clear and flagged points of interst.

Really fantastic and hugely varied walk. If you enjoy walking and find yourself in London, it's a great route. Can't wait to try the other sections now.

A superb way to explore and find out more about our wonderful capital city.
Free of charge, so many parks, walk at your own pace, places to sit, take lots of photos. Places to get a coffee or lunch. Look at the skyline, find out about local authors.
The highlights of this section of the walk are the Downham Woods and Beckenham House and Crystal Palace and the dinosaurs and the Olympic track.
8.5 miles and there is a great cafe at Crystal Palace station

This is my second time walking the Capital Ring. I love it! If you love walking and want to get to know London better, this is ideal! All 15 sections have maps printable from the Internet and the route is well- signposted most of the time. Highlights include seeing a cormorant whizz past along the Grand Union canal, stumbling across the Crate for a pizza in Hackney Wick and enjoying tea in a cosy café on Wandsworth Commmon. With busy lives, you can pick this up whenever you want to. Get your walking boots on and do it!!

My wife and I are greatly enjoying our walks around the Capital Ring. We are learning a lot about the city we thought we knew after living in it for nearly 50 years!
The route is thoughtfully planned so that each segment begins and ends at or near a station either Underground or London Overground. The map and directions, which you can download and print, are mostly easy to follow. In some instances we've had to make guesses and haven't yet got lost!
We already knew that London has many green spaces, but not necessarily how they linked together, and a large part of the route is off-road. Equally, some of the quiet back streets we've walked along are full of interest. The notes tell you important facts about buildings and places we pass.
We thoroughly recommend trying the Ring. Do what we did and start at the segment nearest to home, as a trial, and go from there - there's no need to start with Stage 1

Over a period of 6 weeks I tackled the wonderful 15 sections of seeing the perimeter of London. Places and things I would not normally see and do. After Section 1 when I set off in a clockwise direction from Woolwich, I sought the help from the MapMyFitness app on which I marked out each Section beforehand. It allowed me more time to appreciate the sights as opposed to working out which direction I should be heading. The 138km route which I mapped, turned out to be 147kms. It took me in total 27 hours, give or take an hour or two.

I did not anticipate I would walk along and over rivers, walk over, under and through railway/tube stations, walk along brooks and canals. I saw countless magpies and robins, a kestrel in mid flight and a bird of prey chasing and missing another bird in a forest. I saw a paddock of horses and the odd rabbit.

I enjoyed walking in the forests, noting the oak tress that had stood for hundreds of years. Noted also the magnificent London plane and other trees. I walked through parts of golf courses, around ponds and lakes and open fields. I walked through parks and parks and more parks. I saw a windmill, a couple of drinking fountains and even found one working. I climbed over a stile, I climbed up small hills and down the other side. At one stage I found a spriggan leering down at me.

I crossed over and under roads and motorways. I walked along towpaths and wetlands. I walked under railway arches and even walked along a disused railway line. I walked through a couple of cemeteries, over a stile, through part of a school field and marvelled at some of the historic buildings along the way. The route traverses many residential streets in order to get from A to B.

Transport for London have provided an excellent methodology by which we can enjoy the outdoors of this wonderful city. Each Section started/finished at a tube station which allowed easy access to a starting/finishing point. It was very well sign-posted along the way.

One of my highlights would be not walking on water (which would be a first!) but walking under water. Section 15 of The Complete Capital Ring Route was walking through the Woolwich foot tunnel which goes under the River Thames.

Completed this walk in Jan 2017 over 4 days, it was very enjoyable. Signing was excellent, it takes you to places off the tourist map but well worth visiting. Easy walking throughout on and off road. No need to carry the usual food and fluids as they are readily available. Public transport to start and finish points are superb.
