Must be twenty years since visiting the museum. The local history and natural history were as I remembered and just as engaging. What I did not expect was the new Christopher Dresser and Linthorpe Pottery rooms on the first floor. This is a stunning museum display covering the man and his influence. The display of pottery is breathtaking. Bravo.

We visit the museum regularly and it never grows old. They always have a new exhibition which is lovely, and a trail around the galleries. When we recently went we to the museum they had a middlesbrough exhibition which was great, as my little brother loves football. They also had a football trail that he loved and he was ecstatic to found out some youth players were at the museum. He got 3 players signatures and a photo with Roary. They always have family games and activities upstairs especially in the holidays so It’s perfect. Definitely recommend!!

We had an amazing day out here and the children all loved looking at all of the different exhibitions. We particularly enjoyed the Middlesbrough football t-shirts collection, which we did have to pay for but was definitely worth it and was really interesting.

Visited today 18/07/2024. Not been for 25+ years. Walked into the entrance/ shop/ reception area were 2 lads sat behind a desk chatting to each other. Whilst wandering around the shop 2 adults came in together.
' WELCOME ' says one of the ladies coming out from behind the desk. She continued by telling them the access areas, lift, stairs , rooms, exhibitions, cafe and wished them an enjoyable time there.
Shortly after this a gentleman and 2 older boys came in. Up she got from behind the desk approached them and gave them all the information too. As I moved slowly through the rooms I continued to hear her voice saying the same thing time after time.
I am 71 yrs old, sight difficulties, and walking issues .. I was not greeted or given any advice...
A group of 2 adults and 3 children came in as I was entering the exit/ entrance area, this lady was sat behind the reception desk along with a gentleman who was speaking on the telephone.. these people were not greeted or given information either.....
The exhibition showed some lovely effects from what was once Middlesbrough Cathedral and some information about when it was built , then abandoned later burned down.
Information about the Rise of Middlesbrough from the mud to its prosperous times information about the settlements & links to whitbys Abbey. How towns recieved their names from the farms built on the settlements. Linthorpe pottery & our steel works and shipping/port facilities. I was pleased to see the Impressive egg and sea bird collections still there.. a pleasant 2 hours.

Visited the Dorman museum especially for the titanic exhibition and it was great. Although not particularly big, there was a variety of information and artifacts to look at including from the film. After the exhibition we had a look round the rest of the museum and noticed some other new exhibits. Lots of interesting information about the history of the area where Iive.

We've lived in this area for 35 years and have only just discovered this little gem.
We heard about the Titanic exhibition and decided to go along ang have a look. What a superb, free to enter, museum! The museum itself is absolutely fantastic with well laid out and documented exhibits. The 'cinema' showing Middlesbrough's history gives a comprehensive overview of the growth of the town and surrounding area.
The museum looks quite small from the outside but this belies it's internal size. None of the areas are cramped and there is ample space to take in the exhibits and their accompanying write-ups.
The visiting Titanic exhibition, although a paid extra to the otherwise free entry, is brilliant. There are some original artefacts from the Titanic and some certified replicas. The documentation and timeline is easy to follow and is as informative as it is enthralling. There are a couple of digital stations where visitors can 'walk around' the ship.
No visit would be complete without the obligatory cuppa and a bite and Dressers Tea Room within the museum is spot on.
Well worth a visit.

Lived in Co. Durham for 25 years and this was our first visit. Fantastic! Some info boards a little dated, but Middlesbrough is a fast changing place. Love a bit of John Grundy. Spent 2 hours downstairs and will have to pay a return visit to see upstairs displays.

Hi there!
Yes the museum is open every Wednesday from 9:30am - 4:30pm.
A number of the permanent exhibitions are great for children including Town in Time, Earth in Space and H2O - the museum website has more details about them all (just google "Dorman Museum" - I can't post the link here for security reasons!).
This year's temporary exhibitions (summer: British wildlife, autumn/winter: robots and aliens) are also fantastic for families.
Regular (term time) craft sessions for children run on Thursdays, however during the summer holidays, craft events run on Wednesdays and Fridays, 1-3pm, and are all free. For more information you can call the museum reception on 01642 813781.
