Housed in a lovely old building, this museum tells the story of Dales life through the last few centuries. It not a big place so their info boards are concise and well written. The stairs are steep so those with limited mobility will struggle. I particularly enjoyed the railway exhibition on the top floor; who knew the Ribblehead viaduct was poor constructed and nearly collapsed, several times!

Well worth a visit and you support.

Thank you for your lovely review. We're so glad you enjoyed your visit. We agree, the stairs can be steep in places and we hope one day to raise the money to install a lift, which will make things much easier for those with limited mobility.

I only saw from the outside but this is a beautiful building dating back from 1679. When open is a museum about local life.

Fantastic small museum full of unexpected treasures and stories! Well worth a visit - particularly if there is an exhibition on as well x

We arrived a little early for the expected 11:00 opening time and returned to find neither the museum or cafe open and no explanation. A number of frustrated locals also didn’t know what was going on. Perhaps a poster or even some info on your website would have been an idea? I get it that volunteer-led attractions like this may need to vary their hours, but there’s no excuse for leaving visitors guessing!

Saw the building and just had to see inside. We were not disappointed.
The architecture alone was worth the visit. The inglenook fireplaces are fabulous. Added to it the local history and we loved it.
We were really impressed with the family ancestors and histories. It was really different.
A lot of work has gone into searching the censuses to achieve this.
The attendant was helpful and answered all my questions patiently.
It was fascinating to read about a trip the sixth form paid to my home town in 1901.
It wasn't, just a load of old stuff. It was genuine local history. We loved it.

The Museum is in The Folly, a house in the centre of Settle that was built in 1679 by a wealthy lawyer so, apart from the Museum, it is interesting to be able to have a wander round the house and learn about its history. It is £4 for entry and there are some lovely crafts to have a look at. There is a temporary exhibition called The Great Silence about the impact of war and a rather strange one called the Mythology of Silence. You can find out about the history of Settle and farming in the area and see some farm implements. There is a room giving information about the Settle-Carlisle Railway, and you can treat yourself to a drink and a cake in the cafe which is part of the building.
