Thank you for your 5 star review. Next year admission for adults is set at £7.50. We want to help and encourage families with young children so entry for children up to age 16 is free. We hope people will see this as an opportunity! Our special exhibition for 2022 will be ‘Sea Peoples, Navigating the Pacific’. Cook recognised that one people had populated a huge area of the Pacific. Hawai’i, New Zealand and Easter Island are separated by thousands of miles of open ocean. How was it done? The Museum is open daily in 2022 from 15 February to 30 October

We hadn't sought this museum out but came across it whilst walking about. So we went in and had a browse around. all very interesting and lovely to see all the original handwritten letters and documents. View from attic window was spectacular.
£7 adult entry for the visit which takes about an hour seems a little expensive but upkeep of the treasures inside the museum is of course the most important thing.
Glad we visited, it ws very interesting.

Glad you enjoyed the letters and the documents. Once you get into them, they add hugely to the story, the paintings, the maps and the ship models. We are an independent museum, a charity, run mainly by local volunteers with a very small paid staff. Whilst we receive the occasional public grant for development, all regular running costs come out of visitor admissions. Any surplus (a deficit during Covid) goes back into the Museum. Thank you for your support.

This museum was home to captain Cook . It's a house with lots of history and exhibits across the floors, there's great views across the harbour.
There's a good mix of static exhibits and original letters on show.

Yes, this is a traditional museum with a great deal of authentic, original 18th century material – maps, ship models, paintings and drawings executed either on or just after the voyages, all in the house where Cook’s master John Walker lodged his young apprentice when not at sea.

The museum is located as you would expect by the harbour, in a house that he used to lodge in along with other sailors, as an apprentice when not at sea. There are many descripitve boards and artefacts about his life, along with other sailors, scientists, and artists, esp Joseph Banks..

My wife and I simply had to visit the museum given the famous Captain Cook’s link with Whitby. Captain Cook’s life and voyages are chronicled by beautiful paintings and drawings and quirky artefacts. There are thorough explanations of all aspects of Cook’s life. Also covered was the house’s role as a family home and lodgings for the sailing apprentices. It was a fascinating visit and would recommend it for anyone even slightly curious about history.

We thought we’d pop round for 15 minutes as part of our trip. Over an hour later we came out having learnt lots of interesting snippets of history (such as tattoos first being used in this country). Thanks to the really knowledgeable volunteer (sorry, didn’t get your name)

Very friendly and helpful staff. Well presented exhibits and tells the history of Captain Cook very well, without getting complicated.

‘without getting complicated’ We are glad you felt so. Cook and his crews left an enormous amount about the Voyages, so it is quite a task to decide what to put in. What to put in is largely decided by the rich material of the collection to which we are slowly adding as time goes on.

A skeptical visitor was persuaded to enter. Some hours later he emerged. ‘You didn’t tell me how much there was to see!’

This is a very interesting museum charting the life and voyages of captain cook and the building it is housed in was his actual lodgings when he was an apprentice in Whitby.
