Good exhibits, free art gallery, exquisite gardens
sep. 2021 • Par
This museum is located in the beautiful pannet park surroundings. It has a good children's play park.
Inside there is a free art gallery and accessible WC. There is floor level whitby exhibits including jet and Jurassic style. Exhibitions on other floors and a wonderful tea room all accessible by lift. I enjoyed the wedding exhibition.
Good price allowing for multiple visits. We enjoyed a tearoom takeaway on our second visit and picnicked in the gardens enjoying views of the abbey and st. Marys

Rammed full of interesting stuff
sep. 2021
We called in here on a rainy day, and was very suprised .. There was a small art gallery which was free, to pass through first. Then the main museum, which was packed with all sorts of stuff. From a great fossil collection, jet, stuffed birds and animlas, and thousands of items and artifacts from local life.. Lots of ther displays are in old wooden cabinets. There is no logical way to walk round, its a little disorganised. Nice cafe downstairs, beit rather small, doing lovely coffee and cakes, as well as light meals. Just to note, carers get in for free

Rainy day visit
sep. 2021
Went in just to get out of the rain, it was so interesting we came back the day after as well. I have never been in a museum as stuffed. I will be back.

Too many of the same items on display
sep. 2021 • Par
As others have written there is a lot to see in this museum. However, the very large number of items, many of which have multiple versions on display, makes it difficult to tell a structured history of Whitby. The desire to display as much as possible seems to be the paramount consideration making it difficult to tell the story of Whitby in any sort of structured or logical way. As visitors to the town we would have liked to have learned more about how and why Whitby developed. This was not possible as every available bit of floor space was occupied by display cabinets and the impression was that every item in the possession of the museum was on display whether or not it added anything to the story of the town.

An unexpected treasure....

A great museum, and art gallery. Not just the exhibits but how they were exhibited, not the usual modern glass cabinets but beautiful wooden ones. So much to see and very interesting.

Very helpful staff, and extensive collection of artefacts, all beautifully maintained and presented. The temporary exhibition of three separate videos with archive material relating to bygone times was of particular interest.

Something for everyone
aug. 2021
If you like old and interesting things, then this is worth the trip. It costs £6 for adult entry and under 18's are free. The entry price does give you an annual pass so you can visit multiple times. The museum isn't huge but it is full of interesting things to suit most visitors. There are fossils, a variety of things made out of jet and an area devoted to Captain Cook and his travels. There are also model ships, artefacts from the Victorian era and the creepy "Hand Of Glory". There is a cafe as well, an art gallery as you go in and an additional exhibit upstairs currently showing wedding dresses through the ages. Staff were friendly and knowledgable. Covid safe with hand sanitisers available, and most wearing masks during their visit. Relatively easy to maintain social distancing too.
