Whitby is so pretty and full of history. There’s a great view of the abbey, lots of cafes, shops, bars, restaurants.
Parking is a nightmare so plan ahead.
If you have an aversion to fish then stay away because it’s all you can smell.

Had the impression it was nicer than many seaside towns but was disappointed. Seemed to be a very typical seaside town, chippies, tourist trap shops and little else going for it. Not particularly picturesque either especially with the tacky tour boats. Didn't visit the abbey as we didn't have time so that would be the only reason to go back.

We visited Whitby on a Saturday in September, we chose to use the park & ride system as we thought that the price of a return ticket (£2.50 per person) would be cheaper for the two of us than parking in Whitby itself and also less stress than trying to find a parking spot in the town.
We used our time wisely in Whitby and managed to pack in a trip to the Abbey (our primary reason for coming), a walk out along the harbour arm, a snack in a very nice bakery and dinner in one of the restaurants lining the harbour. The harbour area is relatively large and in it you will find a mixture of working boats, pleasure craft and tourist boats waiting to give visitors a sea trip along the adjacent coast. Worthy of a look are the swing bridge across the river Esk from which you can get some good photos of the harbour itself. On the day of our visit, there were many people dressed as pirates and a band were performing on the bandstand, behind which we found an interesting sculpture of women preparing freshly caught fish. Looming above the harbour is the church of St Mary and the gaunt silhouette of Whitby Abbey and this can make for some good photographs.
There are plenty of food and drink outlets in the vicinity suitable for all tastes and of course being a seaside town plenty of fish & scampi outlets as well. We noticed what we assumed were ‘hen’ and ‘stag’ parties in the area though they did not seem to be causing any problems in the time that we were there. There are souvenir shops selling all manner of trinkets and seaside rocks if you are looking to take back a memento of your trip. A most enjoyable afternoon.
If you enjoy a walk by the sea then the visitor may wish to continue along one of the two harbour arms. We chose the western arm and continued out towards the lighthouse. The harbour arm itself is fairly wide and of stone & concrete construction so ideal if you have any qualms about walking beside the sea. The last section beyond the lighthouse is an elevated wooden platform mounted on top of a lower lying stone pier and although quite sturdy does have gaps in the floorboards allowing visitors to see the concrete below.
On the way out along the arm, it is worth turning back to get some fine views of the harbour with the silhouette of the abbey on the hills above. At the end of the arm there are fine views to the west past Whitby beach and along the coast to Sandsend. From this vantage point you can also watch the tourist boats taking visitors out to sea and on the day of our visit these boats were being buffeted by strong waves and the wind.

We have been here many times before. We have visited as a couple, with a group of friends and also with children. Plenty to do for all ages. Lovely place.

Very busy. Lots of pasty, overweight people with no spacial awareness. Also, families that like walking 5 across and won't move in for people walking in single file. Overbearing stench of competing chippies. Lots of seagulls as you would expect. That all said, some nice curios shops to peruse in and some nice views around.

Spent a day in Whitby and was really impressed. You certainly won't be bored as there is something for everyone.

We walked down to one of the piers, the sun was shining but the sea was lively, and we watched the pleasure boats rocking and some hardy surfers getting hammered by the waves.

We had some really good, locally made ice cream but didn't sample the fish and chips, very popular for obvious reasons.

Great views and good for people watching, it was really busy on a Friday, even with the schools back.

Plenty of shops for browsing and obviously the beach, looked like hard sand, we didn't make it down there.

I visited Whitby on a whim, after visiting Saltwick Bay. Watched the cycles thunder past as part of the Tour Of Britain Road race that passed through Whitby and right past us as we exited Saltwick Bay.

Personally. Im not sure what the huge attraction is with Whitby. It's really busy, full of cheap tat aimed at tourists, and the bay itsself isn't massively attractive.
The real jewel in Whitbys crown is the beautiful Abbey, which sits elegantly on top of its throne (rightfully), overlooking the harbour and the town.
We avoided the town after a bit because it was just too packed, and after a much needed lovely takeaway of fish and chips (Papa's was lovely....read the reciew for Papa's) headed along the cliff tops for a wander before eventually making my way back to the car.
Nothing personal against Whitby, but u guess I'm just not a fan of over-commercialised sea side resorts and bays.

We stayed at Harbour View Apartment, overlooking the harbour. Beautifully appointed, spacious apartment right on the harbour front. Took my 89 year old mum with us who uses a wheelchair. There's a lift in the building. Whitby has something for everyone - stunning scenery, picturesque cobbled streets, lots of quaint shops and pubs, fabulous fish and chips and lovely beaches. Can highly recommend.
