Situated on a military camp, this one room museum is packed with items related to the battle of Kohima in general and a little on the Burma Campaign.
A short introduction video tells you a lot of the battle there. The items from that period and other related exhibits informs you about the different aspects of the battles and the people involved.
Worth a visit if you are interested in an unknown episode in history.

The museum was absolutely fascinating -more so as the Curator was able to help assist my husband to find out more about his own father who was in this battle .

The museum is based in Imphal barracks, a working military base, so photo ID is required. The museum covers the battle of Kohima an important WW2 battle, which isn't as widely known even though it was important in the story of the Japanese invasion of India.. The guides were enthusiasts and knowledgeable, the format is that they gave a talk, and played a video explaining the importance and then we looked at the artefacts. There is a website which gives opening time details and for people interested in military history and the Japanese conflict this.

Bob and his colleague Brian are both enthusiastic and committed to keeping the memory alive for those who fought on both sides at Kohima ridge, but also in the wider aspect of the Burma campaign. They give interesting talks about it, have a variety of objects to look at which tell the story of events.
If you have an interest in this campaign, then you must visit this museum as it is the only one in the country. Bob and Brian are equally passionate to ensure the men of the "Forgotten Army" as they were known, are not forgotten. If you have a family member who was part of this campaign and want to know more, these are the people to talk to and this Museum is the most important place you can visit. Bob and Brian will do all they can to help you to obtain the information that you are seeking. They are really good at helping you make sense of what doesn't seem to have any sense.
Look at the website about visiting times, and contact them about a planned visit as this museum is not one you can just turn up and gain entry.
A visit to this museum will be well worth your time.

This museum commemorates probably the most important battle the British army has ever fought, and it does it with care and proffesionalism. I had the pleasure to visit the museum on a trip to York and its a real hidden gem. I was lucky enough to spend some real time there with the curator who took me through the battle and the people involved. The attention to detail is impressive and the care in which the museum and its artifacts are cared for is obvious. If your going to york and have an interest in the subject or are looking for detail on a family member who took part in the battle of Kohima, or even look at thier extensive library or even just expand your knowledge by looking at the artifacts there then you need to contact the museum and arrange to go. Remember though that these museums need your support so make sure you donate to keep the important work these volunteers do.

We found this museum by chance, just called into the Imphal Barracks on another matter and were told about it by a security guard. For info, the barracks are situated on the A19 at Fulford, on the right, (travelling into York), alongside the Police Headquarters.
We visited on a Thursday morning, the museum is only open on this day and were met by the three members of staff, Curator - Bob and his 'assistant', Brian! Together with Richard. They were all busy arranging things for the evening 'Bands in The Barracks' entertainment and were officially closed, however the staff were very welcoming and we were encouraged to look around.
The museum reflects the Battle of Kohima Hill and all the artifacts have been donated by men who served in that conflict or their family members. Bob and Brian explained some of the contents of the museum and the stories which went with them, with such a passion - it was a humbling experience and one we will never forget - "thank you".
We only anticipated staying for a short time, but there is so much history within the building, we left about two and a half hours later!
There are a number of places which are a 'must' in the area of York, the Minster, Jorvik Centre, etc., put this one on your list, it is well worth a visit.
Oh and don't forget to buy the delicious Kohima Museum chocolate from Bob!

This Museum is hidden away inside the army barracks and we only noticed it because of the sign outside. Although we had to go through security, it was well worth the time. This is a very small museum which deals with a critical battle in India during WW2. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable. Entry is free and the museum was very interesting. Until I went in I had never heard of Kohima! I would have graded this as very good but as it was free then it deserves excellent

This museum is located inside Imphal Barracks and id open every Thursday morning. If you are interested in Military Museums in general or the Battle of Burma in particular it is worth a trip to see this museum on the outskirts of York.As the title of this museum implies this museum is dedicated to the Battle of Kohima and the men who fought in it.It is a small but well set out museum with extremely helpful staff. It may not be one of the more well known museums in York but is very much worthwhile as a reminder of the exploits and hardships of some very brave men.
