Dating to the 14th century, it remains one of the four historic entrances to York. Perfect place to take the stairs up and walk this section of the original walls for incredible views of the Minster and the city.

We visited Monk Bar during our walk around the city walls of York, this gateway (as the name suggest), is near to the Minster and the wall walk from here to Bootham Bar gives some nice elevated views of the upper half of the cathedral. The impressive looking gateway dates back to a time when a city wall defended the city and these carefully guarded gateways controlled access to and from the city. It is possible to join the city wall walk here in either the clockwise or anticlockwise direction, though if you are passing when on the wall it is necessary to descend the stairs in one turret cross the road and then climb back up to the wall once more.
An information board is available here with text and pictures and this is also supplied with a QR code which you can scan with your smart phone for additional information.

Heading to the wonderful Keystones ( great real ale pubs ) I passed Monk Bar ,one of the six great gateways into the city of York.
Constructed during the reign of Richard III ,serving many purposes over the centuries including being a police station, prison and nowadays home to The a Richard III Experience ,it's one of the most recognisable landmark features of York ,since my last trip to York they've installed L.E.D lights on the famous bars ( gateways ) and the ones attached to Monk Bar are so beautiful ,very photogenic ,makes for some great photographic opportunists ,it's easy to locate along Lord mayors Walk leading onto Goodramgate

We stayed at 3 Monkbar Mews for 4 nights. The apartment was advertised as having 4 double bedrooms which was what we needed as our group comprised 2 single men 1 couple and 2 children, a boy and a girl. We were dismayed to discover on arrival only 3 bedrooms and a box room with only a travel cot in it. The owner was unhelpful and although he said he would bring around a camp bed did not. We had no extra bedding to use on the settees. It was a very difficult situation that became very stressful and has not been resolved satisfactorily. We were offered a paltry amount in compensation.
The appartement is tired and in need of refurbishment in places.

Monk Bar is the largest and most ornate of the bars and probably my favourite. It dates from the early 14th century, a fortress, with each floor capable of being defended. On the front are holes where missiles and boiling water could be rained down upon attackers. Monk Bar has the city’s only working portcullis, in use until 1970 and like the other main gateways, Monk Bar originally had a barbican on the front but this was demolished in 1825. The rooms above were once used as a jail for rebellious Catholics in the 16th century. This is an amazing piece of history.

Monk Bar which marks the north-eastern entrance to York is the largest and most ornate structure on its city walls. Constructed in the early 14th century it has four self-contained storeys which have, over the centuries, been used as a jail for recalcitrant Catholics, a policeman’s home, but today a museum housing the Richard III experience. It has a working portcullis last lowered to mark Elisabeth II’s accession in 1953. The side bars were added in the 1820s. The main arch was widened for traffic in 1861.

Love walking around the wonderful walls of York ,they're beautiful and offer stunning views of the city ,one of the most evocative gates is Monk Bar .
Although they look pretty nowadays do not be mistaken, back in the day these were constructed with the sole purpose of defending this city especially from the rampaging Scottish armies up in revolt at the time of their construction.
Constructed during the reign of Richard III , innovative features during the building of the gate such as the gated barbican, high walled enclosure, portcullis were there for the sole intention to inflict massive damage on attacking forces .
Over the years this gate house has served many purposes such as a prison and a police station ,it also houses the Richard III Experience exploring the influence of the Plantagenet Kings influence on the city of York, its most definite well worth checking out, my twin brother Stephen and I were visiting The Golden Slipper Pub, The Royal Oak Pub and The Keystones Pub and couldn't resist climbing up the stairs of the tower and taking in the great views afforded from the gate house looking down along Goodramgate, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or paying a visit to York.

Portão medieval com arquitetura bem peculiar, com abóbadas em vários pisos. É mais bonito olhando-se pela parte de fora da muralha, que também merece uma visita (subir para apreciar a vista da cidade).

One of York's original gates this is easily the most impressive if you look up you can just see the portcullis which apparently still works and if you go in the Richard 3rd exhibition in the gate on the upper floor you can see the workings for lowering the portcullis

Construida a comienzos del siglo XIV, fue diseñada para ser en si misma una fortaleza autónoma. Las habitaciones que hay sobre la puerta tuvieron diversos usos a lo largo de la historia. Hoy es la sede del Museo Ricardo III.
