It is a beautiful Gothic church that must be worth visiting inside. Unfortunately I couldn't because it was closed when I visited York. It was probably due to the large amount of snow left by a heavy snowfall that collapsed the area.

St Michael le Belfrey on High Petergate is a living everyday church, as the largest parish church in York, but only open to the public at certain times. We got there on a Sunday afternoon, when it was almost empty and quite dark. The architecture is referred to as “Perpendicular gothic”, visible on the straight vertical lines of the central pillars, and the windows. The lantern tower is also perpendicular, built along Victorian lines when fires were lit in the tower Fires were lit in the tower as there were no streetlights to guide people in the absence of streetlights. The inside canbe rather gloomy, especially on a wet day, but the pulpit has been renovated and the lectern has a trademark mouse on its plinth, with an area for the musicians on a stage nearby.
On the right of the church is the Guy Fawkes Pub, who is supposed to have been who was baptised there on the 16th of April in 1570, before he became a Roman Catholic and tried to blow up Parliament in 1605. St Michael le Belfrey has replaced a church dating back to 1294 and is sited near to the place where the Emperor Constantine was proclaimed Roman Emperor in 306 AD. So, lots of history to consider in this area and worth a visit.

Not in the least overshadowed by its famous neighbour, it makes for a tranquil and inspiring visit. Dating from the first half of the 16th century, it is redolent of history.
Lovely stone work is a hallmark, both inside and out. Standing at the rear the vista along the aisle is marvellous. Ornate columns and arches lead to the altar area that has a great backdrop in dark with golden columns segmenting it into a trio of images.
Stained glass is in profusion and they all infuse the interior in a restful light.
It was interesting to learn that Guy Fawkes was baptised here in 1570. Thirty-five years he became centrally involved in the infamous and failed Gunpowder Plot.

I visited St Michael-le-Belfrey on the evening of Tuesday 23 May. The couple at the entrance couldn't have been more friendly. A concert had just finished and the space was being cleared but I was most welcome to come in and look around. 'Enjoy your visit'. If only...
As I was appreciating the beauty of the space, photographing some monuments and windows, a man approached: 'You know you're not supposed to be here, don't you?' No word of welcome, no introductory pleasantries, just bullying, brusque discourtesy. I explained that I had been welcomed in. Without apology or explanation this officious bloke walked off.
I mentioned to a young women there that her colleague 'wasn't very welcoming'. Neither was she: 'You've got ten minutes,' she said, and off she went too.
Why on earth were these people so off-hand, so unchristian in their conduct? An antinomian exemption from common courtesy?
To be fair, on my earlier visit to St Michael's I was made most welcome. But it takes only a couple of self-important individuals like this pair to ruin the experience. So if you visit St Michael-le-Belfrey you will probably be greeted warmly; but don't bank on it if these two are on duty.

Located across the road from York Minster, its worth a quick visit. The Anglican church, dating from 1520's, is famous for where Guy Fawkes was baptised. He was born in the inn, just across the road. It holds regular services through the week and 3 on Sundays..

St Michael Le Belfry Church is one of the most beautiful churches in York ,a church that's always a joy to visit.
Constructed between 1525-1537 ,a Grade I listed building and dedicated to St Michael ,the church is famous as it's were the notorious Guy Fawkes was baptised on the 16th of April in 1570, he later became a Roman Catholic ,he is the best remembered participant in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 to blow up Parliament .
I love the look of this church ,Gothic architecture looks amazing ,so photogenic ,makes for some great photographic opportunities ,it's a popular church for tourists but being located in the shadow of the magnificent York Minster and on the junction of High Petergate/ Minster Yard ,hardly surprising it's such a popular tourist destination,it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a trip to York.

This beautiful little parish church is easily overlooked as it's right next to it's bigger more glamorous counterpart, York Minister. However, it's well worth a visit. It has a fascinating history all of it's own. The volunteer guides were really friendly.

Although it is a reconstruction, it is so well done you get a real feel of the way they lived at that time.

This is a small church, which is literally dwarfed by the huge nearby York Minster.
It's worth popping in for a minute or two to appreciate the interiors as well.
