The chapter house, in York Minster, dates from 1260, a great example of Gothic Style. There are stalls around the octagonal room, to sit and take in the splendour of the stained glass windows, and ceiling. There are hundreds of carved figures around the sides, of the Chapter House, including some grotesque ones.

Accessed through a fairly low passage and through a twin arched door guarded over by a carved Madonna and child is York Minster’s Chapter House. Its entrance does not prepare the visitor for what is to come: an octagonal space ringed with stalls each with the name of a Canon beneath some extravagant gargoyles all covered by a ribbed vault ceiling with painted panels and a profusion of gilded bosses. Begun in about 1260 it is a supreme example of High Gothic architecture.

Beautiful circular chapel, peaceful and relaxing, with intricate deco, inside it looked even more beautiful than Yorkminster, there were only a few people inside so we were able to enjoy its tranquility.

Quick stop at the Minster yesterday and we noticed that The Chapter House was doing tours so we decided to pop in on one.

The tour guide was fab and very knowledgeable but unfortunately having only a small amount of time at our disposal, we left the group early.

There is only so much you can view in the Chapter House- especially if you have been in before (as we have many times) so it was a fleeting flying visit.

Still such a beautiful spot to visit and bask in if you have time and haven't visited before.

What a superb space this is; a quite glorious piece of architecture. And if you look more closely there are a number of fascinating and beautiful features; the beautiful Victorian Minton tiles on the floor, the construction of the lovely dome (check out the model just outside the door illustrating how the roof manages to stay up!) and the numerous carved stone heads and animals. Some of these grotesques amusingly illustrate the views of the original masons, including the monk seeking to silence the nun - who knows what she could tell us if she was permitted to do so!

If you visit York Minster -- which is a must -- then make sure you see the Chapter House, which is entered from the cathedral. This is an unusually large English cathedral chapter house, particularly noteworthy for the absence of a center supporting column (made possible by the faux-stone, actually wood roof). If you take a guided tour of the cathedral, you will be ushered in here. Study the beautiful carvings.

The Chapter House is my personal favorite in magnificent York Minster. Its vaulted ceiling is an architectural miracle, its Astained glass windows are breathtaking, but what I liked the most were its carved decorations above the benches. Look at them closely and you will walk straight into the Medieval times. You will see the carved heads of noblemen and craftsmen, jesters and actors, merchants and traders, angry old women and smiling young girls, plenty of gargoyles and animals - each one of them is unique with its own story to tell.

Our very knowledgeable guide told us many interesting facts about the history of The Charter House: it was part of the overall York Minster tour, which is included in the ticket price.

Located within The Minister this chapter house has an especially fine example of a vaulted ceiling with magnificent windows and really should not be missed
