We were looking forward to visiting the gallery to see the Monet Painting. We booked on line, glad we did, we avoided the queue to buy tickets, but you could have easily joined the queue having booked your tickets online as no clear signs. Staff not that welcoming at all. In fact some staff and volunteers were very rude when asked a straight forward question. We wanted to use the terrace bar, no signs to say when open, we were told two different times when it opened. It then rained, so waiting was a waste of time. Shops selling items very poor and some pieces expensive and hardly no pieces to do with Monet!! Needs more interactive things for young children. Cafe downstairs very poor too. For the price we paid, it was very poor.

Very mixed experience. I was excited to visit the Monet exhibition but found it really underwhelming, especially considering the price to enter the gallery. Not much to see compared to other galleries.

York's seemingly massive collection is very well curated and worth popping in for. The highlight is the Centre of Ceramic Art - right up there with collections in V&A etc (and a good shop, upstairs, at the back).
More importantly, the kitchen operates to serious restaurant standards. I had squid and beetroot; the latter with three different textures, the former a meltingly soft counterpoint. Not many places pull this off. Great sandwiches; again, the tomatoes actually tasted of tomato. Followed by outstanding cakes and good coffee.
Decor and atmosphere are lively, although the service was a little uneven.

Fab visit to York Art Gallery this week. Went to see Money Water Lily's but was so impressed with so many other of the exhibits especially Japanese Artist wood block paintings and many of the ceramics.
The light meal we had at the cafe was also lovely and would recommend the salmon and goats cheese dishes. Freshly cooked and delicious and served by extremely friendly and helpful staff.
All in all great visit 😁

Caught Monet exhibition on a trip to York, well set out and some lovely paintings.

Came to see waterlilies by Monet, which is on loan until September. Worth coming for that. Its otherwise not the biggest gallery but a few interesting pieces.
For the kids there's a little colouring table upstairs, and one desk where you can handle some ceramics.
Nice little shop and the outdoor bar out the back is nice, overlooking the garden, with wine, cheese and hams (you can access the bar without paying by going round the side to the back and up the stairs).

Went today to view the Monet that is on loan. Enjoyed the exhibition and the different art/artists that inspired Monet and were also inspired by Monet. This made the exhibition an eclectic mix of landscapes, impressionist, oriental, surrealist and abstract art in the gallery space. In the upstairs gallery there’s a wider range of art from the gallery’s collection including a Lowry.

We enjoyed our visit to the York Art Gallery to see the Monet Exhibition, but for the arrival of a group of young and noisy school children, who were split into groups and appeared to be in every room we went into (with the exception of the Ceramics!). The clamour rather spoiled our enjoyment of the visit and, as York Residents, we'd think long and hard now before returning and, unfortunately, it also made us re-think annual membership of the Gallery.

As an National Art Pass subscriber, gallery entry was free so no complaints there. I visited on a Friday during term-time and it was pretty quiet so another tick in the box. The "Monet in York" exhibition was excellent, with interesting complimentary paintings including contemporary works with good explanatory material in the galleries. The weather didn't favour going out, but there's a large outside space planted with wildflowers.
I loved the exhibition of ceramics plus the permanent collection of other art works is well worth your time in the light and airy galleries. The 2pm talk (on a work by Rose Wylie on they day I was there) was really well done.
The upstairs shop has contemporary ceramics for purchase, I purchased a piece by Robyn Hardyman. Downstairs there's a smallish café which did a nice afternoon tea and scone, albeit at a price.
Lockers need a £1 coin, which is returned. The Gallery is very close to York Minster and the York Museum so you can spend a good few hours going around them.
