This tower is relatively new, only ~500 years old!
I was fortunate to visit when it was opened by Volunteers. They were very helpful and enriched the experience.
Steep Stairs are Wholely carved from a 6 foot wall.
Good exhibits within.
Highly recommended

We visited Fishergate Postern Tower during our walk around the city walls of York, the tower would have loomed over the walls and given defenders an elevated defensive position should the adjacent sections of wall become occupied by attackers. The tower did not appear to be open on the day of our visit (Sunday in September), but there is are some information boards at street level to read. It is possible to join the city wall walk here in the anticlockwise direction only, there being no section of walkable wall between here and Baile Hill.
An information board is available here with text and pictures and this is also supplied with a QR code which you can scan with your smart phone for additional information.

We happened to be in York on 2nd July one of the dates when the Fisher gate tower is open to the public. It is manned by the York Walls Trust on certain weekends. The two volunteer staff on the day we were there ( an overseas student outside and an older man who led the tour on the inside of the tower) and both were excellent. I have walked the York walls many times but have never been in the Tower before. It has been rennovated in recent years and now holds an exhibition over 3 levels. Be warned the stairs are very narrow and the levels can only be accessed by this means. There is a manual system to prevent viistors passing on the stairs.
The museum was informative and the exhibitions facilitated by the self guide cards were well worth the visit. A rare York gem in a city so well provided with historic masterpieces.

The Fishergate Postern Gate is a wonderful looking tower I passed every day on our weeks holiday in the historic Roman walled city of York.
As we were staying in the Travelodge across the road from Fishergate Postern Gate ,our room looked over to it actually,it's an historic tower ,three storeys high ,great stonework ,it's such an iconic tower and is most definitely a great starting point to explore the wonderful Roman walls ,it's easy to locate along Piccadilly and well worth checking out.

The fishergate tower is where my navigation around the city walls began although I think this led me in the wrong direction and out of order but I was super excited nevertheless. Fishergate Tower was built at the point where the city walls meet the river Foss. The tower itself is a small entrance with a pointed archway, the only remaining one left in the city. Follow the wall along to reach fishergate bar.

York is justifiably famous for its beautiful walls and towers and Fishergate Postern Tower is one of the most iconic.
It's a three storey tower, stunning stonework, the views afforded from the tower are really good and the sections of walls leading to the tower are well preserved, I visited here on a Thursday afternoon, lashing ot down with rain, took some photos and then headed over to The Masons Arns Pub.
A beautiful tower, most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to York.
Easy to locate along Piccadilly.

This four story stone tower is open at various times of the year Friends of York Walls volunteers who can provide an interesting account of the towers history and what to look for. Spiral staircase links the four floors and there ars good views from the top windows. Good display of old maps and artifacts found at a recent dig. Well worth a visit if you are lucky to be in York at an open day.

I was lucky enough to pass this tower when it was open to the public. You get to climb to all of its floors all the way to the top floor. There are informative, energetic and friendly volunteers on each floor to fill you in on the tower's history and function. After walk west to Walmgate Tower and the only remaining barbican (also great coffee shop) or walk the wall east to Clifford's Tower and York Castle Museum (toward Micklegate).

Visited on Residents week end when all attractions are free to Residents. Expected it to be heaving but it was so well organised you barely noticed.
One of several Bar Towers in the walls of York and stands on three floors.
Whilst quite small with a very narrow winding staircase; it is not for the skittish or claustrophobic!
The top floor has an interesting history of both York and the Tower with views are well worth the climb. The messonine floor has an ancient gardarobe (toilet) that appears to empty onto the street..... Look out below.... With more historical information and the ground floor introduces you to the Tower. Friendly volunteers helped by shouting, 'coming up, or down' whichever was appropriate for the stairwell but waiting times could be long I'm sure on very busy days or if people are less than fit.
Donations are requested and welcomed for this great historical vestage from the ancient and Dark Ages.
