University College (abbreviated “Univ”, which was called Durham Hall before 1280) owes its origins to the English theologian and clergyman William of Durham (….-1249). The first location of this college is currently part of Brasenose College. It was not until 1332 that the college purchased a house on the south side of High Street, where the college buildings now stand. A chapel was completed in 1398, a hall around 1450, then a tower above the entrance on High Street around 1460. But no trace of these medieval buildings remains today. As the number of students and funds increased, a new quadrangle was designed by Richard Maude from 1634 and although the work (chapel, hall and others) was interrupted during the civil war in 1642, it was resumed in 1660 and were completed in 1676. Much of the main quadrangle has remained virtually unchanged in appearance since then. A statue of Queen Anne (donated in 1709) nestles in the facade facing High Street; no statue would have been installed in the niche above. A statue of King James II occupies the same position inside the quadrangle; it is said to have been given to the College in 1687. A second quadrangle was built between 1716 and 1719 thanks to a large inheritance from Dr John Radcliffe (1650-1714), a former undergraduate of the College and successful physician, who gave his name to the quadrangle (Radcliffe Quadrangle). Among the statues in Radcliffe Quad, Dr Radcliffe himself stands inside while a statue of Queen Mary II overlooks High Street, both having been installed in 1719, at the time of work on the quadrangle were coming to an end. Famous students associated with Univ include British statesman Clement Richard Attlee (1883–1967; leader of the Labor Party from 1935 to 1955 and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951) as well as William (Bill) Clinton (1946-….; member of the American Democratic Party and 42nd President of the United States (1993-2001)).

While there is friendly joshing between Oxford colleges the concept
primus inter pares (first among equals) does not exist. The University
are the colleges and the colleges are the University. In addition the term Town & Gown is appropriately applied to the City co-existing with College.
Founded in 1249 University College by William Durham , sited next to the University Church of St.Mary the Virgin and the University Schools (where exams are taken)further down High Street , is built on traditional lines and has several claims to make.

Very nice college grounds. Beautiful quad. Would have loved to see the dining hall where Harry Potter was filmed, but it was closed on the day we went. Still enjoyed the visit.

Even though many people on the tour of this majestic and historic university seemed to be more interested in seeing the places where Harry Potter scenes were filmed or were the inspiration for those scenes, this place has much more. The fact that this has been a site for higher learning since the 13th century is quite impressive. Even though the actual buildings haven't been around that long, the idea that people have gone to Oxford to learn for so many years is cause for reflection. I would recommend going into the Museum of Oxford in the Town Hall on St. Aldate's before going to the University College. It was very informative.

가장 오래된 역사를 가진곳인데
흔히 배운 보일의 법칙의 보일의 학교라며

좋은 사람들을 만난 학교여서 더 기억에 남아요

University College inevitably causes confusion amongst American tourists who find it difficult to understand It is just one of more than thirty or so constituent colleges and not congruent with the University itself. 'So there's a university university as well as University college' is a response I once elicited to my attempt to distinguish the two. Founded in 1249 by William of Durham it claims to be Oxford's oldest college, although this is disputed by both Merton and Bailliol. Until the 16th century it was open exclusively to fellows of divinity. Its original medieval buildings were replaced in the 17th century by the main quadrangle we see today. Radcliffe Quad dates from 1719 and the Library from 1861. Its most unusual building houses the Shelley Memorial designed by a former student sen down for writing an article called The Necssity of Atheism. It has the longest Latin grace of any Oxford college. Its alumni include politicians such as William Beveridge, Harold Wilson, Bill Clinton and former Australian PM Bob Hawke. I has a very good college choir, which I know from my own experience of participation in performances of three Bach cantatas although I was an undergraduate at Christ Church at the time.
