On the ground floor of the Oxford Town Hall, quite a sight in its own right, is the Museum of Oxford. With good access to the lower part of the display this very small museum punches above its own weight. It is especially good in the interactive stakes - absolutely great to take children to - but adults love it as well. Foreigners are amazed that you are actively encouraged to handle certain objects. They also offer workshops - look on line. A suggested donation of £5 is more than fair. There is a special entrance to the town hall for those with limited mobility. The town hall also has its own ground floor cafe.

Its good if you're looking to kill time. I spent less than an hour in the museum. Not much to see but what I saw was good. Plus there's a nice little coffee shop

Superb museum; loads of fantastic interactive displays, audiovisual presentations, and interesting things to do. Seems like the museum has been renovated recently, and they've done a superb job. Great collection across a large timespan, including surprisingly fascinating displays on very recent history. Some of the interactive displays are so incredibly creative - there's an amazing display, for instance, where you can place various objects on a table, decorated with projection, and the table transforms into different video players, with experts talking about the objects. Excellent set of videos on Oxford's role in the English Civil War. Very helpful, friendly staff. Lots for children to do too! Incredibly, the museum is also pay-as-you-feel. Would highly recommend.

Hidden gem of a museum! A great interactive museum showcasing the history of Oxford. Great for young children with plenty for them to interact with. The dressing up and digging displays went down a storm! Staff were very friendly and helpful. Wish we had had longer to look around so will definitely be making a return visit in the future. I would highly recommend for families with young children (ours varied from 1 year old to 11 years) and plenty to keep them occupied for a few hours.

The things there were great for simple learning for kids to experience. ✝️
Thank you. I especially liked the sand pit to dig up things to find and the part where you pick something and put it on the table for it to generate a video with how that thing was started and what it means.

Located in the marvellous City Hall it’s an engaging account of life in Oxford. Spanning millennia from prehistory to modern times, it’s told with a plethora of artefacts, documents and portraits.
Ancient items include a selection of tools used for hunting. Anglo Saxon times are well covered with a variety of displays.
Key events in the 20th century include life during WW II and how they city coped during those terrible years.

There are many museums in Oxford, but this one is unique. It focusses on life in Oxford in the past and present, especially for local residents as opposed to students and academics. In that way it gives a window into an often overlooked side of the city, and also shows how local life in a small English city has changed over the past 100+ years. The temporary exhibitions are small but worth visiting - a recent one about food, and an exhibition last year of photography by a local guy who runs a chip shop exhibited alongside similar Oxford photography from 100 years ago, stand out as favourites. It’s in the town hall which is an impressive building in itself, and has a cafe where I’ve enjoyed a pastie or two. The museum is especially good for children and adults who live locally and want to know more about the history of their home, but also worthwhile for tourists who want to find out more about the city beyond the universities. It’s small and clearly runs on a small budget so don’t go in expecting anything like the Ashmolean, but if you want that kind of museum, you can go to the Ashmolean. It’s nice to have something a bit different!

Thank you for leaving such a wonderful review of MOX, Firkin! It really warms our hearts to hear how much you've enjoyed your visits to us, especially our special community exhibitions (make sure you check out our new exhibition 'A Way of Life: The People Behind St Giles Fair' if you haven't already!). As you say, we're something a bit different that we hope everyone, whether local to Oxford or a tourist, can enjoy. We hope to see you again soon!

What an awful museum. It was like one of those unloved museums of the70s. It was all a mish mash. There was no order, no timelines of history. The special display was lacklustre and was just plonked there. I might have been spoilt due to seeing the museum of Edinburgh a few weeks earlier which was brilliant. The Oxford Museum seemed to be thrown together from things out of a store cupboard a real disappointment when comparing Oxford to the world's stage.

Hi Opal, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit. The Museum of Oxford was reopened in 2021 after a refurbishment funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This allowed us to bring new displays, objects and interactive exhibits together to tell the story of Oxford in a new way. Our Museum is thematically arranged, instead of chronologically, which is a modern, accessible approach that many museums have now adopted. We feel that this allows visitors to engage with the stories that make up Oxford's history in an immersive way. The objects on display at MOX have been carefully curated by our dedicated team to reflect Oxford's history and community heritage. We hope you'll take the chance to visit us again in the future.

Excellent ‘Rebels and Radicals’ tour arranged and led by the compelling Jess Worth. So many well researched points of interest within a theme, highlighting prominent Oxford based influencers through time. Highly recommend this and the other MOX walking tours.
