This Catholic Church is at one end of Forbury Gardens and adjacent Reading Abbey ruins (from where stones were used for elements of the church build). Opened in 1840 and twice extended, the exterior is much more interesting than the surprisingly plain and austere interior.

This church is located at the East end of the 'Must See' Forbury Gardens and is within sight of the Abbey ruins. The church was built in 1837 and was designed by Pugin who also designed the Palace of Westminster. The church is quite plain inside but there is a stunning ceiling to the Lady Shrine as well as some interesting wall paintings a la William Morris (in my opinion). The stained glass is all relatively modern (1837, 1930s through to 1990) but beautiful.

We went to play about the Empress Matilda produced and acted by the excellent team from Reading between the lines.
Very well acted a real historical thriller play.
The church was set up beautifully for the play, it's interior just like the medieval Reading Abbey.

This is a beautiful church. We married here in August 1997 and had our photo's taken in Forbury Gardens.
The church has a high balcony with a large pipe organ and if you have a choir or a soloist they go up into the balcony and the music fills the entire church, which in itself is very beautiful.

Yes, it is one of Pugin's earliest works, being consecrated in 1840. Do go inside to see this beautifully kept church which I think has a lovely peaceful atmosphere. The architecture is attractive and interesting, with a couple of items made out of very old pieces of stone recovered from the ruins of Reading Abbey. Pick up a visitor's guide from the porch as you enter.
In good weather, the adjacent Forbury Gardens is a pleasant place to relax and the cafe is usually open during the day.

... and the only one in Norman style! It's a beautiful church, recently refurbish and the home of a large, vibrant international faith community.

I went back to have another look at this church on the edge of Forbury Gardens when I found out it had been designed by the famous Victorian architect, A.W. Pugin. Sadly its not up to the standard of his other work like Westminster Palace, a.k.a. the Houses of Parliament. Its a rather squat, funny looking church but is partly redeemed by its location on the edge of Forbury Gardens. It looks like he was trying to make it look older than it is - maybe to fit in with the fact it is built on part of the site of the medieval Reading Abbey. Worth a look if you are in Forbury Gardens.
