Very underwhelmed
nov. 2021 • Familie
Really disappointing. Terrible café, poor customer service, only a tiny park of the house open to visitors, very overpriced. Gardens were nice but hardly worth a £15 entry fee. A member of staff was rude to us when we were leaving and the toilets weren't that clean!£

Nice house
sep. 2021 • Par
The house and park are really nice. Only a small part of the house is open to the public so only took 15-20mins to walk around. But we had a nice walk around the estate.
We didn’t use the cafe as a few people we know had recommended we avoid it. But there are nice places near by.
There were plenty of parking spaces.

Fascinating house, avoid the cafe!

The house itself is really interesting and not your typical NT property as it was restored rather than full of original pieces. I think some more info boards would've been good, as you only learn from the guides in the room, they are brilliant but if busy talking to someone else you may miss out on some of the houses fascinating history (it's use by the army, the period it was derelict, how it was restored etc).

We took a lovely long walk round the grounds. Saw a kite hunting which was lovely to see. Kids enjoyed the area for bug house building and the autumn trail.

The cafe is a disaster zone. Massive queues, staff trying their best but not enough of them (appreciate covid absence may be to blame for this). Spent 10 mins waiting for cutlery after till staff forgot to give us any. Again no jam etc given for scones so chasing staff round cafe to try get some. Food went cold whilst waiting for cutlery. The toilets are proper grim, no toilet roll, dirty, broken locks, not up to usual NT standards.

I suggest go after lunch or take a picnic! Maybe bring a flask too as you'd be queuing half an hour for a coffee!

Interesting Country House, I believe the Dining Room was used as the Crawley family pretend London home ‘Grantham House’ in the Downton Abbey series. Have a close look at the way the imitation Adam style Wedgewood cameos were made, a very good illusion.
Excellent little NT shop near the ticket entrance, at the moment they have some traditionally round/ball shaped Christmas Puddings in stock.
Very strange Scones and Chocolate Brownies in the café, something might have gone wrong with the baking mix. Impossible to butter the Scones they just fell to bits, the Brownies also fell into pieces just trying to take them out of the bag, very messy. So, if revisiting I would not be making use of the café.

What a lovely house. The rooms are so pretty and well laid out. The ceilings are beautiful and the guides are very helpful.

Rather disappointing
aug. 2021
I visited this house with my son and his wife who are NT members. At no time were we informed that only the ground floor was open. The house outside looks wonderful, but the room panels look nothing like original regency ones would. It took less than 20 minutes to see downstairs. The guides were well informed, and the lady at the door was very apologetic that the first floor was shut. I do however feel that £15 for a 20 minute look round a house is very poor, especially as the gardens are very small and really nothing to look at. Just a few roses.
The cafe was busy, and only 2 people serving, I felt sorry for them. The serving area needs to be bigger. The pasties my son and DIL ate were obviously home made and very tasty.
Overall, a disappointing day. It could be a goldmine with very little investment,it just needs someone with vision.

Covid should not be used as an excuse; it is poor management
aug. 2021
This is one of the NT’s lesser known properties, but a gem; standing grandly in extensive parkland. Previous visits would have warranted giving Basildon House 4 or 5 stars, but lockdown has brought a steep decline in the visitor experience. The top half of the house is closed, and the rooms on the ground floor have no literature at all to tell you what you are looking at. The toilets were disgusting. The refreshment facilities were completely inadequate. Only the cafe adjacent to the main house was serving, and the queue was at least 20 people long. Clearly, there was inadequate staffing, and we saw few volunteers (and none in the gardens), except the helpful few in the house. If I was not a member, I would have felt aggrieved at paying £15 for this paltry offering. I blame management, who are clearly not doing their jobs.

Unimpressed
aug. 2021 • Venner
Was sadly very unimpressed with this National Trust property. The house didn’t fulfil its potential and the grounds were equally bland.
Definitely not recommended in any way for a wheelchair user or impaired mobility.
The small area serving teas was poorly managed (one server out the front with at least 3 in the back which could have assisted with the queue we were in ) with little choice of cakes or sandwiches/savouries.
Overall would sadly not recommend.

NOT a good experience!
aug. 2021
We travelled to the park especially to see the house itself. We weren't told at any time before we paid the £15 p/p entrance fee that only a few rooms downstairs were open to the public, we never got to see the upstairs at all. If most of the rooms were closed off why are they still charging full admission? We felt let down to say the least!

We parked in the car park (with disabled bays) at the bottom of a long, winding, steep incline leading up to the house where we met a chap pushing a disabled youngster in a large pram who was finding the steep rocky path rather difficult, I don't know if there is a different entrance with a more accessible route, but if you're physically disabled then I would check beforehand.
