Tis is a wonderful stately home and gardens, with a lovely feel and atmosphere. The inside is very tastefully done and you can tell that this was a happy and well loved home, which can't be said for many stately homes.
The gardens are very colourful and great for a picnic too.
Worth spending a few hours here.

Our visit was enhanced by a gentleman playing the piano. We don’t usually listen to classical music but really enjoyed his playing and are enjoying listening to the music of Einaudi as a result. We went with grandchildren of 6and 9 using a family voucher.

Such friendly knowledgeable staff made this a lovely visit. We learnt so much about the house and its former owners as we walked around.
Some lovely wooded walks too.

We ended up here because a nearby NT property was "full"
We had a lovely walk through the woodland which was excellent
After our walk we visited the cafe, quite dark inside and thus not too welcoming, it also appeared to be a bit like it needed a good clean.
The food was standard NT fare which here was less than average here, it is a shame that they serve the same items at all NT properties , no local specialties.
the staff in the cafe need a rocket up there **** to get them noble and do some work and customer service skills up to where they need to be.
We will come back for a walk but we will be bringing a picnic with drinks so as to save money on less than average food

Stopped here on the return from a short break. All signs and website say house is open, had tickets scanned and no word about house not being open. went to the house and tried to get in until a girl who was cleaning the stairs told us that you have to book to visit the house. Trudged back to check in and told that it is now timed tours only but, she could get us in in an hour which would disrupt our onward travel plans. If only they had put some signs up or the check-in staff had informed us we would either have booked when we checked in or decided there and then but they did not instead we had to walk to the house for no good reason.

As a member of the National Trust. Myself & friend decided to visit Basildon park for a walk in the grounds. It was a cold crisp day but the scenery was lovely. It’s quite a challenging walk. Decided to have a coffee & cake to warm up. The cafe in the house is very welcoming, the staff are so friendly, great cakes & savoury choices. They also welcome dogs.

Wonderful visit to Basildon park last weekend. The house looked great for Christmas as it always does. It is obvious that a lot of time and care had been taken. Staff were polite, knowledge and very friendly, again as always. It was a pleasure visiting the grounds too. I would recommend Basildon park to anyone.

Not your usual stately home as it hasn't been handed down over the years but still has an interesting tale to tell.
Very knowledgeable volunteers and some lovely rooms.
Fabulous grounds which are very popular with dog walkers (this causes car parking problems - one in one out!).
The tea room was a disaster; massive queues, limited menu and a shortage of staff which they informed you of. Such a shame. This could have been because the house is being used for filming so has only just reopened and closes again after half term.
Well worth a visit.

Went ib a family trip to Basildon and there was lots of places to park which is a good sign. Even though they used the overflow carpark the site was not busy.
We chose to do the wild trail an extra £2 for the children around the woodland areas it was great lots of things for them to look for and find and also lots of activities for them. They loved the ball runs that have been made up although I would recommend to take a spare tennis ball although you can purchase one in the shop. Some lovely view when walking around and lots of different routes to chose from if you enjoy walking.
We visited the house and the staff chatted and talked to us about the best route around the children enjoyed the 1950s kitchen and looking and touching the whisks etc. They also enjoyed coming out in the cafe.

Doing a trip, need stopover. Overnight parking allowed pls? NT members.

Like all NT properties they don't allow overnighting and they usually prevent this with locked gates. they don't have the insurance for occupation and no welfare to support it so they don't want to be become convenient night stopovers and they would definately not wish to encourage the litter and possible noise and other problems camping would bring with complaints etc.
If you're a motorhomer then it my be possible in limited cases by looking on Google earth nearby for places to pull in and that's what i usually do, i.e a nearby industrial estate or business area for weekends when they aren't busy and so on.

Do you need to pay to just walk around the park? I’m not really interested in the house, would just like to walk around the park area.
Thanks

We were given a year's subscription of National Trust membership as a christmas present, so it did not cost us anything! We checked the entry price and it was around £12.70 for adults.

how to get there from reading railway station using public transportation
ChrisWM54
Reading, UK102 bidrag
There are buses that pass by there, either direct from Reading, or after getting off at Pangbourne or Goring & Streatley rail stations. The latter option would save time. If you're moderately energetic, walking from Pangbourne rail to Basildon is approximately 40 minutes - flat gradient, along the pavement of the A329.

Hi,
We are thinking of going with a party of family members including 8 under six year olds (4 in buggies). Would you recommend please?
SamanthaThomas

The woodland walk is a bit tricky in places but no real problem as long as it isn't too muddy! There's a golf cart thing that runs elderly/disabled people up to the house so I guess there's also a road if you prefer. The woodland is probably the part which the children will enjoy the most as there are all sorts of hidden places for them to explore. There is plenty of space in front of the house to leave buggies whilst you go inside, but if the children are very young it would be worth taking a carrier.
