This is a wonderful place to visit and if you wish to see these trees it would be wise to do so now as I believe Reading Borough Council is planning to cut them ALl down .

Not sure about the history of this short avenue of eighteen mature Horse Chestnut trees but it’s a nice setting, with river Kennet to the one side and Abbey ruins on the other. Unfortunately the trees are dying and diseased and all will be felled and replaced in 2020 with Sweet Chestnuts. Guess it will take many years before they mature to the same level and it will be interesting to see the new plantings. A real shame that trees which have lasted for such a long time are having to be removed :-(

Nice bit of greenery in the centre of Reading beside the reopened Abbey ruins. Such a shame that all the horse chestnut trees that give the walk its name are due to be felled. Apparently they are defective and dying, and will be replace with sweet chestnuts, but I wonder how long it will take for these new trees to reach the same level of maturity.

Lovely place for a peaceful walk right in the central area of Reading.close to the old abbey which has just seen some repair work.close to waterways and found it fairly quiet after walking through the main town centre.

A tree-lined walk in town by the river Kennet that is a great area to come and just chill out, very relaxing.

I really liked this walk along part of the Kennet and was interested in the sculptures and commemorative plaques. Being in the shadow of Reading gaol I thought this an appropriate place for a free spirit such as Oscar Wilde to be commemorated in such a lovely way.

Maybe coming back here early Summer when the trees are in candle would improve the look of this place but it is generally rather unkempt and the view is nothing to write home about. There are various memorials to Wilde but nothing outstanding and the modern undeveloped prison doesn't help the outlook.

A great addition to the usual Reading walks. Easily added to station/Oracle walkabouts. Will only improve as the gaol is redeveloped.

Between the River Kennet and Reading Gaol this cool and shady place has sculpted gates and railings commemorating Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned in the gaol in the late 19th century, for what is no longer a crime. The prison is famous because of his poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol, which you can read on-line
