We've previously enjoyed a family walk here, but this time was truly spoilt.
The amount of abandoned poop bags and dog mess everywhere was awful.
It's soo disappointing to have such a wonderful place to visit, but ruined by selfish dog owners.

A good place to walk with a fascinating history and free car park. Toilets (portaloo) available in car park. The path around the walls is a bit up and down but the walk from the car park to the City Walls and on to the Church is flat.

Impressive remains of a walled Roman town. A bit muddy in places on the footpaths. Carpark is poor and very potholed. Site also would benefit from toilet facilities. But the remains are impressive just need to go prepared.

I love walking round Silchester, its one of my favourite places. The paths can be a little slippy so good footwear in the winter is recommended

Great afternoon walk while contemplating the mind boggling idea of how this place was very important in Roman times....it's tucked away now....by a sleepy village.
Went about 6 years ago. Don't know if any services have sprung up around it since then.

As you walk around the walls of Silchester, and visit the restored amphitheatre, it isn't difficult to imagine life as it might have been for the Roman garrison and the local population. It is a very stimulating experience, provided you let your imagination run riot .......
However, DO NOT park in the signed and designated car park. Leave your car in the area adjacent to the Calleva Arms in the village, or in the small car park by the church.

I really like Silchester. It's good for a walk and I like to try and imagine how it looked in Roman times. The English Heritage info plaques are very informative.
My visit this time was somewhat marred by a group of New Age visitors sitting in a circle in the middle of the amphitheatre. I was glared at as if I didn't have a right to be there with them and it killed the atmosphere of the place. I wonder if their visit was sanctioned by English Heritage? A real pity.

Walking around the walls is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Though it may not be the most intact ruins, there's still plenty to see and learn about. And the amphitheatre still has sense of atmosphere when you walk into the centre. A great site, especially since it's free to enter.

Excavations!!! Where are they? We heard so much of Reading Uni doing the excavations every summer and all we were directed to was a green field!

How much time should we spend here? Is it the sort of attraction we should spend a few hours or only a short time needed

You can spend as long as you like here. A very short visit to read the display board in the car park, go to the loo and glance over the view of the site would take you ten minutes. A walk around the site would be one to two hours if you took your time on a pleasant day. We had a walk of about half an hour, ate our picnic, spending about an hour there. Hope you enjoy your visit, however long you have available.

Yes, dogs are allowed, we often walk our dogs here. Sometimes there are cattle grazing and they have to be on the lead through the churchyard, but in general it's a nice place to walk dogs

Hi, can anyone tell me if it is wheelchair friendly plz, as would like to visit while we are in reading this coming weekend.

I am almost certain you could walk as far as the amphitheatre on a fairly even path and so it would be wheelchair friendly.

Hi plan to meet friends who are travelling down to Cornwall and having a stopover. Want to spend around half a day In the area and have a relaxed lunch too somewhere. Could you give directions from Guildford please? Is there a charge?

There are no tickets and the carpark is free, think of it more as a walk in the countryside, with Roman walls and the shell of an amphitheatre
