900 years after its consecration, the Abbey is magnificent despite its suffering

A fantastic place to visit and to enjoy the history of. I thoroughly enjoyed wandering around it again and reading the informative information boards that spread from within the ruins across the surrounding parts of Reading, which formerly constituted the Abbey grounds. A beautiful setting for contemplation and reflection.

You never know what is on your own doorstep - our town is steeped in history

I've lived in Reading nearly all my life and still the guides were able to tell and show me things I never knew about the town. 4 of us did the Abbey Quarter guided walk, 90minutes of fascinating history from Henry I up to 2nd WW in Reading. Of course the Abbey ruins are amazing and when you hear of the people who have walked through the Abbey it is just incredible to think we have trod the same pathway as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn - but its so much more - you will have to go on a Abbey Quarter walk and discover for yourselves!!!

Worth a look

The Abbey was massive, parliament often was held here....

Then Henry VIII came, when the abbots said he couldnt have a divorce he burnt it down - and some of the monks too :)

Henry I loved this place and is buried somewhere near - the pandamic and the financial problems have stopped the search

Worth. if the monks said to Henry8 had been allowed to divorce, the place would be at least four times bigger

it is free to go to the Abbey

A place to visit when you are in Reading town

You can spend some time to contemplate amidst the ruins! It is in the middle of the town but very quiet and peaceful place. You can read everything by yourself and can have a tour around the walls.

Fantastic attraction in Reading Town Center.

Hidden in the center of town. It really is a must go. It even has a King of England buried there. If you are interested in the Civil War and Henry VIII then it is worth the trip. You can have a picnic on the open park ground within.

This abbey in the centre of the city is easy to find from the high street. It worth a look if only for the historical context of the Abbey.

Nice little walk among the ruins

The place is right next to the Forbury park. It's a nice walk among the ruins of the Reading Abbey. They occasionally hold open air cinema which is a great experience

Enjoyed walking around, ruins but beautifully restored with informative sign posts, and very close to the museum, nice to have a look around if you want to spend some times outdoors!

More interesting than expected

Information panels dotted around the ruins give historical context, including the fact the ruins were destroyed with gunpowder during the Civil War after the siege of Reading in 1643 on orders of King Charles to prevent Parliamentary forces from retaking the town and using them as defences. I spent around half an hour wandering around (and dodging “weed fiends” who seem to use the area as a meeting point) before moving on.

Restoration has been well done and even though I lived nearby at one point, I had no idea that this was so extensive
