More than just a “fortified Manor House”. Lots to see and explore, with the great hall being exceptional / the roof is amazing and a very fine example of a master carpenter’s creation. The oak staircase is a wonderfully preserved piece of history as are some of the rooms. A wonderful survivor of medieval splendour and a great place to visit. The free audio guide is a must and very easy to use.

We took the kids to visit (9yo and 11yo) and whilst they enjoyed exploring the various rooms, it certainly felt more suited to older visitors.
The site is well maintained and in great condition given the age.
We didn’t opt for the audio tour which was a bit of a regret given there is little in the way of information when you’re in there other than a few info boards.
The stinger was the price to be honest. £32 and we were pretty much done in under an hour.
Ludlow castle was £21 the previous day and whilst not as well maintained, for the size of the site it seemed much better value

A fantastic, beautiful and very interesting place to visit. This is a compact site that has everything you need for a great day out. The free audio tours was entertaining and really insightful. There was a couple of performers playing medieval instruments in the hall and courtyard which was very atmospheric. We also visited the cafe and we’re not disappointed - great cream tea!

A great Castle with audio equipment given for free to learn about the history of the castle. A beautiful colourful entrance way into a grassy courtyard. Lots to see and explore. Well worth a visit. The church is nearby to explore as well. Great views of the countryside. Cafe near the car park.

We had a lovely afternoon here. Very pretty place, took lots of pics. Mainly dry weather helped. Small and compact but well worth a visit. The swallows were nesting in various parts of the building and we could see the parents feeding them pretty clearly.
We ate in the cafe next to the carpark - large americano, pot of tea, tuna jacket potato and a cheese and mushroom Yorkshire pudding toastie for £17. Cakes looked nice too.

Really enjoyed our trip to Stokesay Castle. The name is a little misleading as it is really a fortified Manor House (as the audio guide tells us) but that doesn’t detract from the experience. There is plenty to explore with access to almost every part of the property. There are no disappointing towers that you can’t access because of crumbling stairways - you can get right to the top of the tower to admire the gorgeous views.
I especially enjoyed trying to work out how things had changed structurally over the years and imagine how the space would have been used. The audio guide and artists’ impressions dotted around the property help feed your imagination.
One of the information points just inside the gatehouse allegedly “overheated” and so didn’t work - a minor inconvenience.
Beware, there were a couple of bees nests at the gatehouse. There is a sign but it was located after we had walked past the nest 😂
Access to the dry moat was not possible on our visit because the steps were being replaced, although I think I’ve just realised I forgot to explore a sloped access on the right hand side of the bridge 🤦♂️ (next time maybe).
Lady in the shop was kind enough to allow me to sample some of the mead they sell 😋
Ample parking and a nice tea room/cafe.
Would go again.

Whilst we enjoyed going round the Manor House and learning its history we found the attitude of a staff member to a stuck bird very uncaring and therefore upsetting. In an upper room of the great hall , we noticed a very distressed young crow flying around with no obvious means of escape on this floor although if it had flown down the stairs there was an escape route and it clearly could not do this. I reported this to a younger member of staff , she was totally disinterested and actually turned away when I was explaining about it. All she said was that it had come down the chimney ( obviously a current occurrence so why couldn’t this be prevented) and that it would find its own way out, which it clearly couldn’t. I said it could die of stress and would be distressing for other visitors to see this. She made no comment and kept her head down . This made be angry and also angry to write this now. There were other notices regarding the swallows that doors should not be shut as the swallows could not escape if this was done. So why not for the crows?I understand they are seen differently from swallows but if they’re not welcome prevent them from getting in or provide an easier escape route, if they do get in , eg an open window in the upper floor. Completely spoiled my whole day. Please sort this out.

I would not recommend for people in a wheelchair if they would like to see the whole attraction. But the beauty of the exterior of the buildings can be really appreciated.

Of course the fireplace has seen better days. It was built in the 17th Century.

The fireplace in the Solar and the Solar room itself was refashioned in the 17th Century.. as were many of the other rooms in the castle. The Gate House is also 17th Century. [citing information from the English Heritage guidebook]
is this attraction dog friendly?

We visited with our dogs but as usual my husband had to wait outside and walk around. As the floors of the castle were very rough can't quite see why although the stairs would not be suitable. However he could get to the cafe and sat on an outside table
