This is the Roman Catholic Cathedral and dates from the C19th. It was originally commissioned by John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, the intended architect being Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. However, both men died before the work began The succeeding nephew, the 17th Earl, Bertram Talbot, offered to fund the building of the cathedral and the design work was taken over by Edward Pugin, the son of Augustus.

The building was originally interded to have a spire, but a layer of sand was discovered very close to the building's foundations, resulting in weaker foundations. The spire had to be abandoned.

The building does look a bit insignificant from the road - possibly more like a non conformist chapel than a cathedral.

It is reached up a double flight of stairs with blue painted railing.

Unfortunately there was a wedding in progress, so I could only watch from the back. In many ways, the building is the usual neogothic building, typical of the many churches that were rebuilt in the C19th.

Although the website indicated the church is open 10-4 on Saturdays, the railing gates were foirmly locked when I went past at 3pm.

This is worth going in if open whern passing, but not worth making a special visit.

Shrewsbury Cathedral is not as grand as cathedrals in other cities but it is a nice looking building.

It is on the edge of the city centre and just down the road from the Town Walls Tower and has a nice view of the River Severn.

When people say cathedral people are expecting something massive and old, sadly this is neither. Built in a lovely location and worth a visit if just to get out of the heat of the day.

Hundreds of years old, well worn i guess you'd say it was. Huge stained glass window withe history of kings & saints therein, beautifully colourful. Lots of old tombs dating back a few hundred years too. Cool & perhaps a little creepy b ut in a nice calm way.

Her glass is stunning, full of colour and vibrancy. The cathedral is only open in the afternoon but can be easily combined with a walk along the town walls and a look at the outside of the watch tower. It is very much worth a look in, especially for the stained glass. There is an adjoining cafe, which has more generous open hours, and offers outside as well as indoor seating.

Although this is small than many parigh curches this is an attractive cathedral and has some exceptionally fine 19th and 20th century glass. The baptism window by Margaret Rope is particularly fine with its images of water and fire, lucid colours and a sense of movement. It's a shame the original pulpit could not have been transformed into an ambo, though the current stone ambo and free standing altar are graceful and dignified - though the blue carpet in the sanctuary is just frightful. The rather ornate chapel to St Winefride is a clever construction and olds together well.

My friend and I took the tower tour at height in Shrewsbury 27th June - Matt was very humorous knowledgeable and supportive. Was a great add on to our Shrewsbury cathedral experience.

What a great tour we had - took our time and felt he had plenty of time for us.

Small tour of 3 of us - was very personal.

Thank you very much Matt. 👍

I visited this cathedral with my partner. We found the stewards to be very helpful and gave is some good information. Because we were looking for a 15th century memorial we made a few visits here to get more information over 2 days. We were told about alternative locations for the information we sought which was helpful in itself.

We apparently visited the cathedral during Passiontide as somebody was covering up the statues. We thought this might be a member of the clergy but he wasn't but intended to be once he had done his seminary. He then tried to do what can only be described as a "hard sell" on the cathedral suggesting that my partner and I get married there (having initially assumed we were married) and also suggesting we attend Mass. My partner told him that we were unlikely to get married in front of his priest as suggested as we were both divorced. He then said he would pray for our divorces! We left feeling very uncomfortable from this experience. Had it not been for this experience I would have rated the building higher
