Lovely walk around part of the lake. A nice cafe in one area and a restaurant in another part.
Nice easy going walk on a tarmac pathway.

Some nice views as you are walking about. Two good places to eat overlooking the lake. Walk was spoiled by the brambles, nettles and trees overgrowing the bitterne walk area. Car parks are not free but you can pay by Ringo (if you can get a signal). The track does not go right round the edge of the lake.

Several entrances with large car parking areas, machine takes cash or use app RingGo , no signal issue on BT 4G currently £4.80 for day, but less for 2 hours
Plenty of disabled bays with no charge to park
Cafe salt and pepper really nice place, very helpful and friendly staff at reasonable prices, we had cake and refreshments, but they do hot good as well and queues for fish snd chips was good indicator 😎 the cafe is fully licensed as well 😁
Toilets provided at rear of unit
Children’s play area, and plenty of tables and stone circle seating areas spread out between car parks
Signs on walks need to be improved, we came across criss route areas with no signs at all, please sort as we may have missed some views
Shame this reservoir has no access for a walking route all the way around, like others we have walked.
Other than signs snd length of walk a very pleasant few hours relaxation

Back in February this year we walked around the north and eastern shores of Chew Valley Lake. This is a reservoir built in the early 1950’s and opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1956. We just ran out of time, and the weather was not too good at all. At that time we resolved to return to complete our full-circuit walk.
Today the journey to the Lake took a lot longer than we hoped, and sadly we had again, too little of the time that was needed. On arrival we parked up in the site carpark (off Wally Lane on the northern end of the lake). We sorted out enough change for the parking ticket machine, but when we got there is wasn’t working at all. The previous customer had put all his money in. The machine didn’t issue a ticket and then it displayed ‘not in use’, but didn’t refund his coins! This wasted more of our precious time. especially whilst we found another parking ticket machine and queued again.
On what was a very warm day, we then set off north, then west on Wally Lane and thence onto the recently opened path that follows the west side of the lake; heading southwards towards Woodford Lodge. Sadly we had to turn back just before reaching the Lodge as we had an impending table reservation at a nearby restaurant in Chew Stoke.
Our walk was very short, but very enjoyable. The path has mostly gentle climbs and is partially shaded. There were very good, but occasional views, of the lake in the stretch of path that we walked.
We have resolved to return and set-off again, and that will hopefully be sometime soon.

I have driven past this lake hundreds of times without stopping. We have parked in the Picnic area carpark on a few occasions, and walked up the top-path along Wally Lane to the nearest point to the pumping station. Today we took part of the Chew Valley Lake Recreational Trail from the carpark south east towards Bishop Sutton. This was a disappointingly short walk, so we extended our walk by taking Bonhill Lane and Bonhill Road to Bishop Sutton, and then returning to the Trail via Ham Lane.
As we had made a lunch reservation in nearby Chew Stoke, we didn’t have time to take the south-westerly section of the Trail to Woodford Lodge: that will be for another day in the future.
Two new sections (Phase 3) of the Trail will compete the circular walk, but despite research I cannot find any online information regarding dates for the completion of construction. A map showing what will be the complete circular route is available by searching for “Chew Valley Lake recreational trail phase 3 map”. I cannot provide the URL because TA blocks the inclusion of URLs.
The sections of the Trail that we took did provide some good views of the lake, and information boards about bird life would be interesting to some, but not particularly to us. The day was mostly overcast, but in the final 15 minutes of our walk the sun did put in an appearance.
We well return when the warmer weather is with us.

Mind how you go....don't bother parking if you don't have a smart phone. Can't plug the machine because it doesn't take coin. Absolutely no reception to download the parking app so was parked without paying. Bonus for us, loss to whomever manages the parking and a loss of us going back in a big hurry due to the parking fiasco.
Not to mention the public toilets to the left of the parking lots, in the woods, were absolutely disgusting. Blocked and plugged up! Mind how you go.

We just had to stop off at Chew Valley Lake to admire the views and particularly the many varieties of birds all squabbling amongst themselves. Ducks, geese, swans, terns, all present in their glorious plumage! Such a beautiful lake, and I remember once having a fresh trout cooked for me, newly caught in Chew Valley Lake. Marvellous lake, highly recommended!

Disappointing lack of access to the lake. Very little in the way of walks and the one we found was so regimented we felt rather constrained.

Had to pay via phone which charged £4.30 instead of the advertised £2.20, there are no signs telling you where to go. The walk only lasted 20 mins and then you had to turn back, and on most of the walk you can’t see the lake.
Would have been nice to have some information and other walks to see the lake as from what we could tell the only people that can are fishermen and sailers!

Lovely place to take the grandchildren. They can feed the ducks, geese and swans. It has a nice play area for the kids. Also a lovely food outlet where you can have a nice meal (sit in or out) or enjoy some fish and chips. The paths connecting the two car parks has been tarmac'd so good access for mobility scooters. There is a fee for car parking. Dogs are allowed, as long as kept on a lead and you have plastic bags to clear up after your pooches.
Only downside is some inconsiderate dog owners do not follow the rules. They allow their dog to roam free and foul the paths and grass areas without clearing up after them.

Within the area of the lake covered by the Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club - no, not unless you are a member. Trouble is that I do not know if the Club control all areas of the lake (but I expect they do). It would be best to call the Club and ask.

Maybe one of those disposable ones would be ok, but best to check someone at the lakes before you go.

i think there might be a bike hire place on the way to the lake, but family cycling is a nightmare, narrow lanes, few passing places, i just moved here from the centre of Bath, felt safer cycling in the city than it does here
Is there somewhere to have a picnic?

Frome, UK176 bidrag
Yes , there are plenty of picnic tables . If you go to the second car park , about half a mile past the main entrance to the visitor centre there are picnic tables, less crowds and large grassy areas to sit .
