I'm not a Benjamin Britten freak by any stretch of the imagination (there are 20th Century composers who i'm much more drawn towards) but i do have a professional interest and i'd recently been gripped by the book 'Britten's Children' by John Bridcut. As far as composer houses go, this surely set a gold-standard. One might bemoan that the pool and tennis courts (Britten was a keen sportsperson) are no longer in evidence but what is there in place of these two things is a pleasure to behold. As I was wandering around the museum i thought that this could quite possibly ignite the curiosity of someone who has no knowledge of the composer. On the special day that I went with my friend , rooms which were generally not seen by the public were on display. It was wonderful to see Britten's shirts, Pears's colourful art collection and Britten's comparatively spartan room. The archive was truly incredible with examples of burnt manuscript from the fire, letters from set designers and costumes from Noah's Flood. Nicholas Clarke was the erudite but approachable guide. His words were very clearly spoken and enjoyable to listen to. He explained that the archive is stored a few metres higher than the rest of the building to save it from floods.

We were booked to see the garden and had made an error with dates. The staff were all, without exception, fabulous in the way they dealt with this. The garden was lovely and it was interesting to hear the history. We will see the house too next time we visit. However what stood out for us was the very warm welcome from all staff we encountered from the wonderful lady on reception to the ery interesting gardener who showed us around. They are most definitely the prize asset of this place. Thank you.

This is a beautiful place. Amazing mid century interiors and fantastic art collection. All the staff we encountered were really friendly. Well worth booking for the upstairs tour. Loved the cork and gold wallpaper!!

We visited here recently and found it very interesting and there was so much to take in that we need to return in the future.
We found the guides very informative and knowledgeable, but saw symbols of an audio tour on exhibits, for some reason, this was not mentioned to us this was not mentioned to us !
We also thought that the exhibits behind the reception desk was somewhat dark and we were unable to read the descriptions of items due to poor lighting.
Other than that, all the staff were friendly and professional and made us feel welcome.

Superb visit to the Red House. The exhibition was very informative and the house and grounds really give a glimpse into Britten and Pears lives at The Red House. The staff and volunteers were excellent…. Knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic. A Great place to spend an afternoon, away from the crowds. Whether a Britten fan or not, the Red House is definitely worth visiting.

The benefit of this visit is the the home has been little disturbed since Britten/Pears lived there - so that lots of the original furnishings and artefacts are in place. Story is well told. Pleasant gardens for a relaxing afternoon.

A wonderful insight into the life of one of Britain’s finest composers. A visit really does give you an insight to BB’s every day life. The guides are very helpful and full of information so do ask them questions.

Great to visit the Red House again. Although the house & exhibition are well worth a visit, we went on a day when a charity garden party was being held.
We loved the gardens last time we visited & really enjoyed seeing them in full bloom in early summer. In the background was the gentle thrum of folk music on the lawn where we'd picked up Pimms & cake.
Quintessentially English experience altogether that cemented the Red House as a favourite place to be.
Whatever the excuse, no visit to Aldeburgh is complete without a trip to the Red House.
We loved the gardens last time we visited & really enjoyed seeing them in full bloom in early summer. In the background was the gentle thrum of folk music on the lawn where we'd picked up Pimms & cake.
Quintessentially English experience altogether that cemented the Red House as a favourite place to be.
Whatever the excuse, no visit to Aldeburgh is complete without a trip to the Red House.

It was wonderful to visit The Red House again, and as always to receive a warm welcome.
The audio guide to the Gallery and exhibition is brilliant.
There is a new and brilliant John Piper exhibition (part of The Art Collection) in the kitchen (curated by Britten Pears Arts' Executive Director, Sarah Bardwell).
The Annual Exhibition: Britten & Women is fascinating.
The Garden was looking splendid.
The audio guide to the Gallery and exhibition is brilliant.
There is a new and brilliant John Piper exhibition (part of The Art Collection) in the kitchen (curated by Britten Pears Arts' Executive Director, Sarah Bardwell).

Hi Sara, thank you for your message. Dogs are welcome in the gardens but must be kept on a lead. It is possible to bring your pushchair to the site and access Britten's Library, the gallery and Archive.
The only challenging areas are the Composition Studio which is accessible by stairs only and The Red House as there are fragile carpets and rugs that are original to the House, so depending on the weather it might not be possible to take it through the House.

Thank you for your enquiry. There is parking on site but places are limited. The nearest car park would be at Aldeburgh Church which is approximately 10-15 walk away. Alternatively you can take advantage of our minibus service which runs a circular route around Aldeburgh every 30 minutes. Approximate times are shown below.
Look out for the Britten minibus sign at these pick-up points:
Fort Green Car Park (1.45, 2.15…4.15)
Aldeburgh Baptist Chapel (1.50, 2.20…4.20)
The Red House (1.55, 2.25…4.55)
Scallop (2.00, 2.30…4.00)

Hello. Admission is free, but we do welcome donations. The only charge is for parking during the summer months (June-September). Parking is £5 (except for blue badge holders), but we operate a free minibus shuttle during summer opening hours. You can find more details in the section 'The Red House' of our website.
