I had high hopes for Kentwell Hall’s Dickensian Christmas event but unfortunately left feeling quite underwhelmed. The main issue was the cost—ticket prices were extremely high, and for what was offered, it didn’t feel like value for money at all.
The event itself was surprisingly sparse, with not much to do once inside. While some effort had been made to create a festive atmosphere, it felt minimal, and there wasn’t enough to keep either adults or children engaged for more than a short time. Adding to the disappointment was the strict half-day entry rule unless you paid extra, which felt restrictive and unnecessarily profit-driven.
Overall, while the concept of a Dickensian Christmas is charming, the execution left much to be desired. For the price, I expected a fuller, more immersive experience. I wouldn’t recommend it unless major changes are made to improve the value and overall offering.

I'm sorry to say that I agree with most of the previous reviews. Overpriced, very little on offer and the most unenthusiastic character actors! £119 entrance fee for a family of two adults and two children This included a small teddy bear (admittedly very cute) and a book that cost £2.99 to buy in, as gifts for the children from Santa. Led to believe that we would get to sample some of the food of the time period, but the actors were the only ones eating. All food and drink were over and above the ticket price and everything had run out by late afternoon. Carols around the tree in the courtyard turned out not to be. We asked one of the character actors if the carol singing was still going to happen and were told to go up to the house, as it would be warmer there. This then turned out not to be inside, but we were all stood outside the front door of the house, which had already been locked for the day! All very disorganised. Scrambled attempt to hastily put something together, as more people appeared expecting to sing carols, which up until that point, was most definitely not going to happen as advertised...
All very disappointing, misleading and an exceptionally underwhelming experience. We will most definitely not be back.

A cold day but I was made very welcome by the participants encouraging me to warm myself by the wood fires and engage me in the period. The house decorations were excellent, greenery in all rooms and tables being laid for dinner. The kitchen in particular was engaging with food preparation and cooking in correct period style.
The villagers, toyshop, road menders and others again made me most welcome and talked knowledgeably about the toys and food. I didn't see Father Christmas but the children I met who had were happy to have done so.
I had a most enjoyable day.

We had the most delightful half day at Dickensian Christmas at Kentwell Hall with all things festive. The experience was excellent, authentic and felt very special for Christmas. We were lucky with the weather which was a sunny winters day; the grounds are muddy so advise wellies or boots.
The house is delightful and we actually need to return to see the bedrooms of it after spending so much time within the grounds and activities of Kentwell. Particular favourites were the Carol reading and toy makers in Kentwell village.

I’m a mobility scooter user and my partner and I attended the enchanted lights tonight. It was a lovely evening seeing the outside of the house and gardens lit up with beautiful lights.
This is an outdoor event which needs to be born in mind when considering accessibility. I have a basic lightweight all terrain mobility scooter, not one of the serious rambler types but a basic folding one with a strong motor. You do need a wheelchair or scooter equipped for rougher terrain as this event is on compact gravel, loose gravel, unmowed grass and mud. And that can’t be helped due to the nature of the route through woods, gardens and along grassed areas and going over ramps securing the cables.
There is one section that is down steps but an alternate route was signposted and you could still go and see the lights in the section just not travel through it, so you don’t miss anything. A second section through the yew castle might be too narrow for larger scooters or wheelchairs but again there is an alternate route available but my scooter made it with no problems.
If you have the right set up with your wheelchair or mobility scooter then this is a fantastic event, but please remember it is an outdoor event on uneven ground at a historical house and gardens. But me and my little scooter had no issues and had a great time. And all the staff and stewards were fantastic and so helpful.
There is disabled parking reserved nearer the entrance and ticket office but it is on grass with a muddy road/path leading to the ticket office. If your mobility or setup won’t manage this, you won’t manage the rest of the event due to the nature of it and the age of the house and grounds and it retaining it’s historical appearance.
But wow it really did look enchanting and beautiful tonight.

Arrived on site, the women in the shop was rude and mocked me and my family,
The footpaths was just mud, all the exhibits outside was rundown, on the positive the reinactors was very good.

We’ve been to Kentwell before and I thought the Christmas event would be fun. I’m a solo parent with two children, one with SEN. It would cost £94.50 for us to go. £94.50!! We paid less for Lapland UK a couple of years ago (which was phenomenal). The photos Kentwell have shared on social media do not look magical. They look Spartan.
Come on Kentwell, a £2.50 discount for carers is just insulting and shows a complete lack of understanding of and respect for the role of a carer.
Such a shame. But when we’ve attended other events it’s never felt busy so clearly the high prices put lots of people off.
I think if they halved the price they’d more than double the tickets sold.
The cafe and shop are also dated and full and need a proper overhaul.

Scaresvilles.....
Went to scaresville last weekend, it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. The unfortunate part was when returning to my van it had been broken into and all my power tools were gone. They didn't seem to want to do anything about it or return my ticket prices as a common courtesy. No cameras, The security guards were just standing at the burger van all evening so not protecting anything in my opinion. So please be careful when parking. I lost everything I use to earn a living and had to replace it all costing me a fortune.

Pay absolutely no mind to those posting bad reviews. I have never been before so I have nothing to compare it to so I went with an open mind. As someone who loves horror I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of this experience, the staff were lovely and each of the themed scare areas were well thought out. I loved interacting with some actors. I don't want to give any of it away but I was literally fan girling over a couple of characters in there. When we came out at the end I wanted to go round again. I will be one of the first in line to book for next year. Thank you Scaresville for making my spooky season.👻🎃

Is it worth £28.50 for just over an hour at Scaresville, and do you have to pay for food and drink? (It mentions you can have refreshments when you arrive but it doesn't state what they are, or whether you are pay on top) Thanks.

Hi, We believe that the cost of Scaresville is brilliant value for money and TA feedback agrees with this. It is a unique experience. There is food and drink on site, from burgers & chips, tea, coffee's etc. The main bar at the end of your experience.

I would have thought not but why don't you ring and ask the phone number is 01787 310207.
