Worth a visit

Fascinating part of English history worth visiting with some good walks. Lovely exhibition detailing the excavation of the longship and explaining some of the artefacts found at the burial site. The guide by the burials was very interesting, knowledgeable and interesting to listen to.

Perfect mix of displays and information without crowding the burial mounds. Beautiful spot to explore in Suffolk.

Easy walking option for grandparents. Enjoyed the exhibition which managed to engage a 12 yr old boy. Very dog friendly.

A really interesting visit and guided tour

We have wanted to visit this site for some time and had no great expectations of what information or facilities were available. There is now however lots to see and do with a modern museum (ok lots of objects are in the British Museum but there is plenty here to get a real feel for the history of the early Anglo Saxons and the site), the then land owners house, and a not altogether attractive viewing tower. We also signed up for an hour guided tour which was excellent placing the burial site in context with Rosemary the guide providing an excellent history lesson and responding to questions with clarity and honesty.

History brought alive.

A Brilliant day out. Well organised site. Lots to see and so interesting. The 1 hour guided tour was fascinating and brought the history to life. The Exhibition Hall and Shop and Café were in modern buildings but did not detract from the overall experience. The House was excellent and being taken onto the site and listening to the guide was a pleasure. Walks around the extensive site were well laid out . Taking into account the surrounding area and what has taken place there over the war years etc. it was still a wonderful experience. The staff/volunteers were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.

Great day out at this National Trust treasure
sep. 2021
Six middle aged friends had a lovely day walking around the house and the burial grounds. As we entered we were asked if we wanted a guided tour, which we agreed to be booked onto. Before the tour we walked up to the house and looked at the photos and information about the site, which made a good start in getting into the history of it all. The tour was absolutely brilliant. Took us over an hour and the volunteer was so knowledgeable and made it so interesting. After this we took the river view walk, which was so beautiful and peaceful. We then had a meal in the café, which was really good value and very appetising. To end the day we spent some time in the exhibition hall. Just a really good day out.

Pleasant walk.

Interesting walk around Sutton Hoo, the Anglo Saxon history was really interesting which alone takes more than an hour to digest, nice cafe but the men`s toilets were pretty shabby as the paper towel bin was full and all paper towels were on the floor.
On a nice sunny day with a picnic this is a good day out.

Disappointed

One of the most important archaeological sites in the country - a place that I have wanted to visit for over 40 years from when I learnt of it in primary school. A disappointment. There is little to be learned of the people or the location. Yes there is some detail of the grave finds, but little about why they were here and what their story was. The national trust have invested a considerable amount of money in the shop and cafe and not enough about the history. Quite a lot of the display was missing, though the original horses bridle and horseman’s sword gave a glimpse of the true value of the site, but all frustratingly too little. The site of the graves provide a sense of antiquity, but the vast number of surrounding pig pens do considerably detract from the “royal ship grave”. The staff are all lovely - I’m only sorry that they have nothing more awe inspiring to offer.

It is very well set out and informative. We really enjoyed finding out about the local Anglo Saxon history of this place. We definitely recommend anyone who is interested in history to pay a visit.

The Dig in reality
sep. 2021
Sutton Hoo visit only came about because of a movie called the Dig which we watched during lockdown, glad we did because the place and tour of the mounts brought it all to life. Unique find in England and well worth the visit, need about 3+hours. The tower view is well worth the climb.

A very pleasant morning.
sep. 2021
Arrived on site 10.30am midweek car parking was a bit of a chore. Made my own space eventually. Very surprised how busy it was given that the kids were back at school. First stop was to the Great Hall. I personally found it very interesting and in fact went around twice. The replica kings helmet was fantastic. Artefacts and information on the viking era again v informative. A quick visit to the house which gave info on the find and dig with exhibits photos and film shows. A pleasant walk followed to the burial mounds which were overlooked by an observation tower which sadly I didnt attempt not because of the height but rather the number of observers already in residence. The whole site had a plethora of well informed eager volunteers and there were story boards throughout. Nice vistas around the site and good walks. All in all a very pleasant morning and worth the hour and a half travel to it.
