This is a very special place and rarely have three hours passed so quickly. From the warm welcome, to the exquisite chapel to the excellent guides in the house and the gallery and ending with a perfect lunch it was a memorable experience all round. I had always regarded Watts as a rather gloomy Victorian painter. Now I know a lot better.

A fascinating set-up here in the Surrey hills. Much to see and good facilities for a brief stop on route or a destination in itself.

Decided to visit one Sunday afternoon. So interesting and steeped in history . So much to see . There is an amazing chapel with the most stunning architecture and artefacts, with a very experienced host who portrays all the details. The gallery is amazing with portraits from long ago . The artists house, where George and Mary lived is so pretty. Lots of woodland walks, a shop and a tea room .

A quality few hours spent touring the whole of the site. The gallery is amazing and the whole experience was stimulating. The history of the Watts family was supported by quality guides both in person and written handouts. Tea room provided good quality food too. You must visit the chapel, a short walk along the lane, where the art in its construction is superb.

Really nice place reflecting some amazing artwork. Between sculptures, paintings and such right in the country.
Very nice place to browse and get inspired as well as taking my partner to look at some local nature and history.
Worth the trip.

The setting in the Surrey woodlands is lovely . We didn't have time to see the main gallery but were allowed a glimpse of the enormous horse which comes at the end of the tour . We weren't very overwhelmed by the current, modern exhibition but we appreciated the beautiful contents of the gallery shop and enjoyed a rather expensive piece of cake in the gardens . We had a wander through the woods and saw the recently constructed theatre/lecture stage in its arboreal setting . Unfortunately no time to look at the church either so a return visit will be necessary when we are next 'down South'.

Loved the paintings. A beautiful place, and staff very friendly. So close to the A3 and didn't know this was here. The Watts gallery paintings are so evocative, and help the onlooker see further.
Cafe served drinks and beautiful pottery, worth it rather than takeaway cups.

We were fortunate to be able to book the first slot of the day at 10.30, but the cafe opens at 10, and so does the shop. Suitably fortified, we made our way to the gallery, a single storey building, displaying Watts’ paintings, some De Morgan pottery and paintings, and a temporary exhibition of Tuke paintings. We were struck by how many styles of painting Watts produced, and by the enormous size of his sculptures. The grounds were lovely, with pretty borders, and plenty of picnic tables. Next we walked up to the chapel, only about five minutes away, and saw Watts’ and his wife’s grave, and that of Aldous Huxley. The chapel is rather odd, but must have made a great deal of work to carry out all Mary Watts’ plans. We walked up to see the outside of the Watts’s house, an attractive Arts and Crafts building, but sadly it wasn’t open, and I was very sorry to read that all the furniture was sold when Mrs Watts died, and the niche where she used to read to ‘signor’ had been destroyed.
Back to enjoy our picnic, and off we went. There was a very civilised atmosphere, and the other visitors and volunteers were quiet and well mannered, which made us very glad we had been there, as the whole experience was delightful and life enhancing.
