Sunday 8th October 2023, My husband and I awoke to a lovely warm and sunny day. We picked up our friend Susan in the car to go to the Apply Day & Country Fair at Hill Close Gardens in Warwick. We went here in 2022, and it was a fabulous day out, so we decided to come again this year.

Hill Close Gardens are rare survivors of Victorian detached gardens (once found in many urban areas) used by townsfolk who lived about their businesses in the town centre and had nowhere to grow flowers, fruit or vegetables in their small backyards.

In the early 1990’s, a local resident alerted the neighbourhood that diggers were moving in and that was the start of the rescue of Hill Close Gardens, with one of the deciding factors being the designations of four summer houses as Grade 2 listed buildings. The site was then listed later that year and preserved for the nation.

We arrived and parked our car in the pay & display car park. We then entered the gardens and looked at all the lovely country fair stalls. There were arts and crafts, food and drinks, wrought iron ware, natural beauty products, and displays of weaving and spinning as well as growing and cultivating apple trees.

My husband purchased a pot of honey from a local bee keeper. Susan purchased some hand-made cards and a picture of a black cat which reminded her of her old cat ‘Minnie’. We also purchased apples which had grown in the gardens, these were lovely old fashion varieties with wonderful smells and delicious to eat.

After wandering around the stalls, my husband, Susan and I then strolled around these lovely gardens with their lovely old fashioned plants and herbs with wonderful old fashioned apple and pear trees.

This year there was music in the gardens. There was a lovely ‘Jazz Band’, which played for two hours and was a pleasure to sit and listen too. There was also ‘Tibetan’ Gong music, which was amazing and spoke to your soul. It inspired me to write a poem called ‘Warrior of Light’.

We took loads of lovely photographs as we walked round and rested in the summer houses and on benches overlooking the gardens.

We had a wonderful day and hope this lovely day will happen in 2024.

I wish I'd taken photos this time, my second visit. We went as two couples and treated ourselves to the cream tea. Beautiful scones, just the right amount of jam and cream. Served up by the lovely May. Everyone of the volunteers I've met here are lovely, so enthusiastic about this gem of victorian life. They've fought hard to keep the gardens from being developed and preserved some insightful history. A fabulous variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers, with most gardens having a brick summerhouse. I wish I lived a little closer to be able to volunteer myself. Please visit for yourselves and enjoy a peaceful glimpse into the past.

A very pleasant stroll around these old sloping gardens that were used by the townsfolk, almost like allotments, lots of bees buzzing around being busy, and lots of different plants and flowers and some historical gardening tools and lots of press cuttings about the fight to save the gardens, and a pleasant cafe

A most unusual group of gardens, almost allotments, used for over a century by local people for gardening and relaxation on the edge of Warwick beside the racecourse. A fascinating historic survival. Tea room and museum. Public car park adjacent, ten minute walk into Warwick town centre.

Bank Holiday Sunday 28th August 2022, My husband and I awoke to a lovely warm and sunny day so we decided to go out for the day to Hill Close Gardens in Warwick.

Hill Close Gardens are rear survivors of Victorian detached gardens (once found in many urban areas) used by townsfolk who lived about their businesses in the town centre and had nowhere to grow flowers, fruit or vegetables in their small backyards.

In the mid 1840’s the owner of Hill Close divided his land into 32 plots and rented them out to the townspeople to be used as detached gardens. The plots were laid out with hedges, entrances, paths and summer houses or sheds, and there is still evidence of fruit trees and ornamental planting. The summer houses were mostly wooden but some were later built in brick.

By 1860 the plots had been sold freehold to individual families and this has contributed to their survival, as had lack of road access. Unfortunately now only 16 plots remain as the land to the north, east and west was sold off for housing in Edwardian times.

Some owners cultivated their own plots but others rented them out. The Pratt family for instance who were druggists and chemists owned plot 12 for 100 years and plots 13 and 14 (now built on) for 32 years. They cultivated plot 12 for the majority of the time. Other owners kept their plots for investment and rented them out for £ 120 to £150 pounds a year.

Some tenants remained for quite a number of years but others like Leonard Baldwin, hotel keeper of the Warwick Arms Hotel in the High Street, used the plot for only two years. The plot occupants used them to grown fruit, vegetables and flowers.

The gardens continued to be cultivated until after the Second World War when Warwick District Council began to buy up the plots for housing, after which they gradually became derelict. When diggers were seen entering the area in the early 1990’s, a local resident alerted the neighbourhood and that was the start of the rescue of Hill Close Gardens, with one of the deciding factors being the designations of four summer houses as Grade 2 listed buildings. The site was then listed later that year and preserved for the nation.

My husband and I wondered around these lovely gardens with their lovely old fashioned plants and herbs with wonderful old fashioned apple and pear trees bursting with fruit. We took loads of lovely photographs as we walked round and rested in the summer houses and on benches overlooking the gardens.

It was all so quiet and peaceful – far away from the city madness. I even found inspiration here as I wrote two poems called ‘A Place To Be Slow’ and ‘Fairy Moot’.

After walking round these lovely gardens my husband and I were now in need of refreshments, so we went to the onsite café where we sat at a nice table outside in the sunshine and indulged in a large slice of lemon drizzle cake and a pot of tea for my husband, and a large slice of orange and almond cake and a glass of rose lemonade for me.

It was nice to sit outside and relax. We were even joined by a local cat that stopped to say ‘Hello’ and spent some time lying quietly beside us. We left the gardens when they closed at 5.00 pm.

This is a beautiful quiet peaceful place, and we worth a visit if you are in the area.
