Excellent

Made an unplanned visit only to find the museum was closed. The amazingly friendly staff allowed us to use the toilets and opened up the back to back cottages and allowed my wife, who is from Kent to see inside. She has not stopped talking about them since. We said we would be back but sadly ran out of time.

A 'Proper' Museum with Interesting Exhibits
nov. 2021
Went to Bradford in mid-November and visited two museums. One was this Industrial Museum, of which I no real expectations, and the other was the more famous National Science & Media Museum, of which I expected great things.
Well, the Media Museum turned out to be utter dross compared with this 'proper' museum, and I would urge people visiting Bradford to choose this one over the Media one.
The staff here were very knowledgable, and were eager to answer questions about the interesting artefacts on display. It was sometimes a job to get away from them and move on. (There were virtually no artefacts at the other place, which I am loathe to call a 'museum' at all.)
The upper floor was dedicated to the local historical specialisation of weaving wool, and the large looms moved as they would when in operation. Poignant figures of small children represented the workforce, who sometimes received dreadful injuries if they mis-timed when they crawled among the moving parts. Sadly there were no kids to do live demos...
But my favourite part was the transport section, where there was a good collection of the locally manufactured Jowett motor vehicles.

Worth a visit

Not a bad collection. There’s a tram, small shunting locomotive, trolley bus and good collection of Jowett cars and vans. On the first floor there is good collection of spinning and weaving machinery. Other exhibitions include a large collection of printing presses and general belt driven machinery.

Outside you can see a rebuilt row of old back-to-back houses, stables and the mill owners house. There are a few horse drawn carts and carriages.

Not much in the way of catering, just an awful coffee machine. There is a small shop too and toilets.

There is a good video explaining the weaving process and another about the history of printing. There was a lack of any information about the workshop machinery though.

The day I visited it was very quiet and there was nothing actually working which would have made a visit a lot more enjoyable.

A Local Treasure
okt. 2021
I enjoyed wandering through the: outside garden, houses, carriage and horse stables, the inside collections of: steam machines, printers, motor bikes, cars, and vans. It was free, and felt like a local labour of love.

The poems by Ian Macmillan, and fantastic posters were emotional - actually the whole visit was a delight. Photos showing pride in Bradford's multicultural community portrayed a real, living history.

Thank you Bradford, the museum staff and volunteers!

First visit not knowing what to expect. The site has onsite parking. First impressions, staff very friendly helpful and a good knowledge of the site.

The ground floor has a display about Appleton, who discovered the ionosphere.
There are many machines engines and all manner of steam engines. There is also a display of early printing presses. And some train memorabilia, and a fine selection of locally built cars.
Upstairs was a working display of the linen industry from sheep's wool to yarn to woven fabrics. The room was noisy at times as the machines were being started and stopped for demonstrations. But very interesting to see.

Outside a selection of terraced houses with different time fittings from Victorian to WW2 to 1970s style.

Outside were horse drawn machines and coaches. There was a tram inside but the doors, were closed.

A highlight for us was the blacksmith on the way to the car park. So friendly helpful, and trying to show the children how things were done. He made a large square nail for our children, and even put their initials on the head. A real gem, keeping tradition alive.

Wow what a welcome, the volunteer at the entrance was fantastic, gave us a brief intro to the museum and what we can expect. Inside was safe, clean and had many original features. A variety of exhibits from machinery to vehicles as well as homes.

Would definitely visit again.

Enjoy a great day out.

We had a wonderful time at the museum. One of two little areas were closed due to the pandemic but still a really great visit. Free entry, but it is so good that you would have to be pretty tight fisted not to put something in one of the donation boxes. Interesting and informative way to spend a set Saturday in July. We had a personal demonstration of the art of the blacksmith - what a great guy Ian is and if you get the opportunity to chat to him, then do not pass it up. Well done to all at the museum.
