Very disappointed as a large number of paintings were not on display. Staff member cited staff shortages and unsafe galleries.

I decided to visit after viewing the world class collection on Art UK website. I was very disappointed that there was so little of this world class collection on show with many galleries closed. The downstairs gallery of Victorian Art was well displayed but the fine Twentieth century collection was poorly displayed at the top of the stairs. The gallery felt under resourced, neglected and lifeless despite the number of visitors. I suspect that if you attend a work shop you get a very different experience. Very sad.

Looked forward to revisiting last Sunday. However, several upstairs galleries closed due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. Informed this was due to 'austerity' and a staff recruitment freeze and apparently this has been occurring regularly.

Free to visit, this offers a lovely range of art across the ages from older to modern, painting to sculpture, so there was something for most people. A large gallery was empty upstairs and another closed, which was a waste, and the toilets need revamping - they are from a bygone era. However, it's worth a visit and an hour of your time if you enjoy art.

Really enjoyable visit, interesting exhibits which are well presented. Worthy of an hour or two of your time.

The modern art was not my cup of tea. Not my favourite gallery though there are some interesting-ish pieces. Average gallery. Still if you’re in Leeds I guess you can take a look and form your opinion

It's not easy to assess an art gallery where the exhibitions constantly change. But you sense that the curators know an awful lot more about art than you do - which is as it should be. And that is even if you don't really like much of what is on display. Widens your perspective.
What is really sensational is the building, which has been - and still is being - restored to its Victorian glory. The Tiled Hall is in itself worth the journey and the explantions by the friendly staff make it all the more interesting (the brass vents in the ceiling to evacuate tobacco smoke and the defaced bust of Goethe because we didn't like German stuff at the time). Definitely a high point of a visit to Leeds.

The first time I visited I wasn’t alone and it was just as enjoyable! I love this place, especially with the sweeping staircase and stunning wall art by L Gotz.
They have some Vortism 2D pieces which are fascinating. They’re kept in a smaller, unlit, room.
The tiles in the cafe are fascinating too. Have a great time!

We went on a Sunday and there was only one room open, which was Victorian art. It made us study the pictures that we normally would not look at. Past experience means we know that the rest of the gallery is wonderful and has interesting items on display.
Rather than open on Sunday, and have room open, I wonder if they should shut it entirely...

Have you tried the Hepworth in Wakefield? Its a train ride away (15-30 minutes from Leeds). It's a nice gallery too. I went to Leeds Art Gallery quite a while ago, not sure if there's a major renovation. They had minor ones during the time I visited.
